Valley needs a new mission statement
Richie Herink
To the Editor:
Hopefully the rejection by the Planning Board of Valley’s current expansion plan zoning change request brings to an end the war for patients between Valley and Hackensack not-for-profit hospitals.
As a non-profit hospital, Valley uses the language of business to rationalize the need for a zoning law revision. For example: Valley needs to stay competitive, or Valley needs to keep up or it will go under, and if you don’t progress in this business you will die.
Does anyone doubt that Hackensack would buy Valley in a minute, even with Valley’s zoning restrictions and if Valley were about to “go under”?
In my opinion, Valley does not have an expansion problem. It has a management problem.

The Board of Directors needs an overhaul. Same people for years. Their vision for the hospital needs to be revamped.
Fresh ideas.
Has for a very long time. What’s really fascinating is they have a shrinking number of people still believing that this whole exercise was about healthcare. Make no mistake, this was more about keeping ridiculously high paying jobs more than anything else.
Valley has an arrogance problem. In the end, the strategy of dismissing their opposition as an ignorant minority offended too many people – including members of the Planning Board. This was theirs to lose and they blew it.
You’re exactly right, although they will be a lot less arrogant the next time. The bigger problem they have going forward is one of trust.
This thread is hilarious….these are not elected officials. They answer to the Board of Directors and their client base…..Ridgewood and beyond.
#5, you must not sit on any boards. Board members should be replaced when they cannot contribute in a meaningful way. What #1 was saying is that many of the current Board need to be replaced with new Directors who can bring fresh views & ideas and take Valley in a new direction given it won’t be allowed to expand beyond their current height or footprint on their Linwood campus in Ridgewood. Time for new ideas, and that means new Board members.
The bottom line is it was an ill conceived idea that both Valley management, with the approval of the elected Board of Directors, thought they could pull off. Wrong.
The next “business decision” regarding whether or not to push the expansion agenda through should really be interesting.
