Perry orders troops to border
By Mike Lillis

Texas Governor Rick Perry announced Monday that he’s deploying as many as 1,000 National Guard troops to help manage the surge of child migrants at the state’s southern border.

Perry, among the most vocal critics of President Obama’s handling of the crisis, said the extra force is needed to deter the wave of immigrants, safeguard Americans from crime and protect taxpayers from the costs of managing the new arrivals.

“I will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor,” Perry said at a briefing in Austin. “The price of inaction is too high for Texans to pay.”

Perry’s move came just hours after the White House announced that the number of unaccompanied minors arriving at the border is dropping – from 355 per day in June to 150 in early July, according to spokesman Josh Earnest.

Earnest said the reasons for the drop remain unclear, but suggested the administration’s efforts “to work with Central American leaders to publicize the dangers of the journey” have contributed significantly.

Perry on Monday acknowledged the drop in the new arrivals in recent weeks, but he offered a different theory for the trend, saying it was a “clear indication” that local, state and federal law enforcement efforts are working.

#2, I’m sure someone said the same thing about you or your grandparents when they arrived in the US. Unless you’re a first nations member, then you’re an immigrant, too.

You are missing one fundamental difference. One group came into the country via legally-permissable channels. The other did not.

  7. Thank you #5.
Just wait until a child who has left his or her country and crossed Mexico in search of a parent or refuge from life threatened by gangs or drug lords is shot by a US National Guard. I hope that never happens — but in our shoot first ask questions later culture it is a possibility. These are children and they are refugees. We need to understand that.

  8. Well #7 go down to the border and bring some kids back to your home in Ridgewood. We have good school system and sports which should help them assimilate into our country.

  9. Latino gangs are every bit as prevalent here as they are below the border. The incentives for going north has nothing to do with crime and gangs. There is only one incentive and that is much better economic prospects. The exact same situation occurs throughout the world where you have borders separating significantly different economies. The difference is, in everyone but ours, these other countries, strictly control their borders. Try getting into any EU nation from outside. Try getting into even Mexico from Guatemala without a passport.
