District 36. Senator Paul A. Sarlo (D)
Reader Says No to the Gas Tax Increase : NJ actually has, according to the Feds, the eighth highest annual revenues to devote to roads and bridges of any state.
Funny how some on this blog want to raise gasoline taxes. The Federal Highway Administration tracks all revenues collected by states for use on transportation. The two main sources are the gas tax and tolls. NJ gasoline taxes are low, but the state’s toll collections rank second in the nation behind only the much larger New York. The result is that NJ actually has, according to the Feds, the eighth highest annual revenues to devote to roads and bridges of any state. And yet the NJ Transportation Fund is bust? Why you ask? According to a 2013 study by the Reason Foundation, NJ spends 8.4 TIMES the national average for every mile of road it maintains or builds… it’s not because of the low gas tax, it’s because of inflated union wage rates to build & maintain roads at 8X the national average. No wonder Senator Sanzari, I mean Sarlo, wants to raise gas taxes. Vote him out, recall him, whatever, the guy is a pure thug
Senator Sanzari wants to increase then gas tax because he is Senator Sanzari.
Why give a politician money under the table when you can give a politician money on the table?
Gas taxes should be raised to build tunnel to NYC; to repair roads and infrastructure… all the bridges. How do we know how bridges to shore are holding up for example.
Even to add more trains to NYC in the rush hours or somehow to improve on the crowded trains.
Not doing it is only hurting ourselves. Of course politician salaries should also be cut.
Screw the trains, let the commuters pay for them.
NJ has the 8th largest budget to build and maintain roads in the fourth smallest state… something doesn’t add up there. Would guess that if the tunnel to NY costs 8X what it would based on the national average, NJ taxpayers and commuters will be on the hook for all of the inevitable delays and cost overruns brought to us through inflated union wage rates, Sanzari’s thugs, and more mob/union graft. Sounds like a scam, and #2 is clearly in on it, what a union hack !
Wow, #2 suggests NJ residents should pay more in taxes and politicians should get lower salaries. How about cutting inflated union wage rates to build and maintain roads, bridges and tunnels in NJ? Why don’t you think the inflated costs we pay for roads should also be cut? Otherwise, aren’t we just throwing good money at a corrupt and inefficient Transportation Fund that can’t even stay afloat despite the 8th largest budget for roads of any state (thanks to our toll revenues, which are the 2nd highest of any state after the much larger NY) ? Why don’t you mention that?
