Nearly two of every three families making an interstate move involving New Jersey last year were leaving the Garden State, the highest rate in the country.

New Jersey had the greatest percentage of outbound moves of any state nationally last year with almost 65 percent departing, according to a company which bills itself as the largest transporter of household goods in the country.

The Garden State has led the nation in outward migration for the fourth time in five years.

In all, United said it tracked 4,003 moves out of New Jersey in 2014 compared to 2,169 inbound.

Nearly half of those leaving New Jersey were bound for Florida (15 percent), California (14), Texas (9) and North Carolina (7.5), spokeswoman Melissa Sullivan told NJ Advance Media.

Retirement and jobs were the top reasons to leave the state last year, according to a United Survey of departing New Jerseyans.

About 42 percent reported leaving for a new job or company transfer. Forty-one percent attributed their move to retirement. More than half (56 percent) of people leaving New Jersey were over the age of 55, with 22 percent older than 65.

  1. “it’s too damn cold here” is often what you hear at every mid Winter time —
I plan to move further South is the lament.

  2. Dam right Dom. Drink some of that wine and warm up.

  3. “It’s too dam expensive”
Property taxes are out of control
    Income taxes are high
These are the consequences of a “union” state that has been run into the ground by democrats

  4. Boy its cold outside. Those dam union thugs did this.

  5. It’s too much for the pro-Union group to comprehend.
Nj needed to pay 4 times the cost per mile to build roads as non Union states.
State, municipal, and county employees get overly generous pay, benefits, medical, and retirement ( then take their retirement $$ and spend it in fla)
Where do you think the money comes from?..
A perfect example is Mercedes Benz leaving NJ with a bunch of other big employers, to a more tax friendly state.
Do you really expect a corporation to come here with 1000 good paying jobs to replace those lost?
Corporations compete in all 50 states, and those with high costs like nj Lose jobs

  6. I’m probably a fairly typical Ridgewood resident. I came here for the pleasant surroundings, the ease of commuting to my City job, and good schools for my kids. The last of my kids will graduate High School in a little over 3 more years. At that point, the realtor sign is going up, and we plan to move elsewhere. It will most likely be somewhere out of NJ. Quite honestly, I simply don’t understand why anyone would live here if they don’t have kids in the school system. The schools are as great as they once were, but they are still very good. Real estate values remains strong, even when the overall property market takes a hit, so there’s this added comfort that you will likely have a healthy resale on your home when it’s time to go. It’s not a bad place to live, but the taxes are high. I guess my overall desire to leave is more to do with my dislike of suburban living. It totally sucks.

  7. Anonymous #5 You clearly fit 5 of the 7 Qualities of Chronically Unhappy People.

    1. Your default belief is that life is hard.
Most all Sociopaths fall into the ‘Victimhood’ category!

    2. You believe most people can’t be trusted.
A Sociopath is threatened by everyone, and they assume so much about so many different things.

    3. You concentrate on what’s wrong in this world versus what’s right.

    4. You compare yourself to others and harbor jealousy. Unhappy people believe someone else’s good fortune steals from their own. They believe there’s not enough goodness to go around and constantly compare yours against theirs. This leads to jealousy and resentment. {Could this have been written specifically for you!!! Hmmm}

6 You consider your future with worry and fear. There’s only so much rent space between your ears. Unhappy people fill their thoughts with what could go wrong versus what might go right.

I hope you can learn to be happy someday.

  8. #5 one of the reason costs in Nj are so high is 1) our proximity to NY, 2) we NJ residents live in a Donor state we were listed in the bottom 45 of money received back from the federal govt.. 3) in dealing with Ridgewood directly we’re a town that practices non- partisan politics, this hurts us when money goes to committee and steering and assignment committee’s we have no political favor or leverage that is the price we pay for the style of politics practiced here. 4) Ridgewood chooses to restrict industry and other ratable which shifts the burden of the tax levy to the residents, this applies to the boe, and village budgets.

    Yes you are typical.
Here temporary while the kids are in school then back to nyc.
Some of us actually like the suburbs.
We are here for the suburban surroundings, not for the people.

  11. Typical of you #5 ” It’s too much for the pro-Union group to comprehend” What a elitist. We union member are just stupid to understand.

I guess the line at the NJ Welfare office was short this morning.

  13. Ridgewood’s not a union town… the blog posters here just want us to think it is. They’ll all be fleeing the state for tax free places like Florida.
