>Village Council Begrudgingly Approves Purchase of Two Replacement Police Vehicles

>Ridgewood Police Chief William M. Corcoran found himself on the hot seat during last week’s Village Council Work Session as Council members Jacques Harlow and Kim Ringler-Shagin persistently questioned him regarding his request to purchase two new Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor vehicles. Corcoran firmly stood his ground, respectfully stating that he considered his request more than justified since there are currently no marked vehicles in his fleet with less than 40K miles.

Mayor David T. Pfund and Deputy Mayor Betty G. Wiest concurred with Chief Corcoran, but Councilman Harlow and Councilwoman Ringler-Shagin maintained their unified position that new vehicles should not be purchased at this time. In the absence of Councilman Patrick A. Mancuso, Mayor Pfund asked Village Manager James M. Ten Hoeve to offer an opinion. Mr. Ten Hoeve concurred with the Chief’s opinion; the vehicle purchase was subsequently approved.

  1. >If we have to make a big deal about buying two police cars then I’m living in the wrong town? Maybe we should see if another town had a used police car we can buy real cheap.
GIVE ME A BREAK! Lets talk about saving some real money! Maybe the BOE can spare a few bucks to buy the town a bicycle for the police. PLEASE!

  2. >The BOE is your money too… left pocket meet right pocket.
If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Let us count the number of idle cars sitting in the parking lot. There will be at least two — want two more? You got it!

  3. >that is so true the cars are geting old just like the dam council members.we need new cars like we need new members.what the hell is going on with this town.they have the money but only for what they like to spend it on.you dopes better start to look at the hole fleet dum, dums,

  4. >we like david fund.and mancuso.but we need to get some new members, old wiest and the other one .what a joke.

  5. >wake up .because you will be puting out your trash can on the crub very soon.

  6. >God FORBID this town has Police Cars that work!!!!! Stop being cheap you two and wake up. Start spending money on things this town needs…They probably need a lot more than two. These are vehicles that are used every day ..24 hours a day. How long do these two fools think a vehicle that gets used that much is going to last??? It is very obvious that Public Safety is NOT AT ALL a Priority to Harlow or Ringler Shagin and that is something that you should all be very very concerned about!!!

  7. >Are you kidding me!!?? $584K for a new train station roof and $811K to fix a damn and the Chief of Police has to PERSUADE these board members to buy two freaking police cars!!?? WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS TOWN!???? This is really disgusting and dissapointing. Maybe Harlow and Shagin would think differently if the police had to respond to their homes and were delayed by old vehicles! Let’s get real people!

  8. >SELL A FEW LIQUOR LICENSES.
    Let’s be constructive here.
How much does it cost to issue a license?

But they could bring in $600k -or more each.

    New roof–fix dam—new cars.$$$$

I wouldn’t mind going to a GOOD restaurant in town and not have to worry about having my own wine.

  9. >as a resident of this town for 38 years, I have been witness to plenty of poor financial decisions. for the council to try and nickel and dime the RPD over a few police cars is the most foolish thing I have ever heard. Perhaps a political ‘stunt’..so they get some sorta publicity as trying to be fiscally astute??? Its probably the DUMBEST thing I have ever witnessed (read) hearing about this crap. Sounds more like they are trying to ‘flex their muscles’ with the chief. Take MY TAX money and BUY NEW POLICE CARS. stop pissing it away on dumb expenditures. You expect a cop to race to the scene of an emergency, then give him the tools to do it. IF the town was SMART, they would Automatically get rid of these cruisers on schedule every certain amount of miles…then the — USED cars would fetch a PREMIUM on the market from all the ‘wannabees’ who like old PD cars…and they would save on Maintenance if they only kept cars that were under warranty.=COMMON SENSE ( i know some out-of-state PDs ‘lease ‘ their cruisers to avoid this kind of childish dialogue with newly elected politicians who may have an ‘axe to grind’ with the PD) leases are not purchases..(not sure how that works in NJ dept procurement procedure)

  10. >Having lived here almost 30 years I think we should keep our police and fire departments well-equiped. We’re not a sleepy little village anymore. Cut expenses elsewhere. Why a new fence around Graydon when the sandy bottom pool might be replaced? Why new lamposts (I know they contain lead paint but I’ve never seen kids licking the lampposts)? Why fix the damn dam over at the farm? And the list goes on and on. Don’t scrimp with our men in blue!

  11. >8:32

Now there’s a smart man for a change. Thanks

But if you think our council can think ahead your wrong.
    They’ll hire a consultant.

Why doesn’t the council ask the town folks for advice.
There are enough other SMART people ( lawyers, Doctors, engineers ) in town to help out with advice and stabilize our taxes.

Put an ad in the News and ask for a committee to be formed to look into, let’s just say buying new fire trucks.

Wait till the fire dept. wants a new rig, this is not peanuts, its more then the Dam rehab.

    DAaaaa plan ahead. Unheard of.
Ask for help, Are you kidding we know it all.

  12. >the bottom line no one should get laid of in town,we need them all and we have aload of work for them to do so this is bs.

  13. >8:32 – good call. I agree whole-heartedly. Let me add that there is something very wrong with the council. They all take turns letting 1 person say NO. Just so they don’t all appear to be one money wasting unit. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: a budget means working within ones means, not getting extra money for every little whim: Lampposts, Dams, Soccer fields that flood, Town halls that flood…etc. etc.
