THE RECORD
WYCKOFF — A police officer investigating a report of a possible burglary went to the wrong home and fatally shot a German shepherd dog that lunged at him and bit him on the boot, Police Chief Benjamin Fox said Wednesday.
Fox said police received the call at 3:45 p.m., reporting the possible break-in at 621 Lawlins Road. Patrolman Kyle Ferreira responded and mistakenly went to 622 Lawlins Road, Fox said.
Ferreira received no answer when he knocked on the front door of the wrong house, Fox said, so he went to the rear of the house and let himself into the back yard through an unlocked fence gate. When he got to the rear of the house, the patrolman saw an open window and believed he had found a possible point of entry for a burglar, Fox said.
Ferreira drew his revolver and approached the window, believing he might encounter a burglar, but “a large, growling German shepherd lunged out the open window, bit the officer on his right foot and latched onto his boot,” Fox said in a statement.
Thank goodness it wasn’t a black lab or there might be riots.
Apparently lots of inconsistencies here with the early reports . It’s worth reading the 76+ comments on the. Original story by neighbors and the dog owner.
Why not use pepper spray like the mailman or other delivery personal?
So it seems that a cop shot an unarmed dog. When will these dogs learn that if they just went about their lives normally, everything will be alright? Don’t they know not to intentionally get into violent interactions with the police?
Yes, he should have used pepper spray. Cop did a terrible thing, as usual. Sorry
best part of the story is that the cop claims he fired 4 times at a dog that was attached to his foot and only hit it twice. Thats some pretty poor shooting if you cant hit an 85 pound dog that is attached to your own foot! He was either further from the animal than he says or he should be suspended for being such a poor shot.
my god , send him back to shooter school. can some one tell me what the hell is going on with all these police problems going on all around the u s a. who is watching the police dept’s.
No wonder the ammunition budget is up so much this year, poor family losing their dog that was only trying to protect it’s home from an intruder.
Cops should not be allowed to have guns, like in United Kingdom
It’s too dangerous for the rest of us.
Trigger happiness runs amok in copland.
what a joke. way to manny police. this is not the city.
Agreed, why do we need so many cops? The seem to spend most of their time protecting us from Verizon and PSE&G workers, tranquilizing bears, and shooting people’s pets. Over policed and over taxed, is that a coincidence?
