The New Jersey Transit train that plowed into the Hoboken Terminal in September — killing one woman and injuring scores of people — was found to have faulty brakes just months before the crash, a report said Monday.
Back in January, inspectors discovered that a “hand brake gear pin” on one of the train cars was “completely out,” according to PIX11.

The condition of the brakes at the time of the accident is a non-issue. This was a “man-caused” disaster. The engineer allowed the train to cruise into the station at too high a speed until it became impossible to slow down before reaching the end-of-the-line barrier. Were we not told that the brakes were applied, literally a second or two before impact? This is due either to the neglect of the engineer, or to a deliberate act or plan on his part.
N.J. Transit has a poor safety record. It’s is never permissible to drive with brakes that don’t work. No excuse. If brakes don’t work that is the cause. A split second makes all the difference with brakes. The brakes may have been applied ; how can you tell. I mean God, who in the hell would drive with faulty brakes. NJ transit should be sold to a business that can manage the trains safely.
Agreed
This new information sounds like a weak attempt at a cover up
Faulty or not, brakes aren’t much use if they are not applied due to a sleeping engineer.
This was inevitable… there’s not much money to be gotten from a lowly engineer…
Oh, I heard on CBS news last night, radio news , that the accident is being investigated and the investigation will take a number of months possibly six, and then the cause of the accident will be announced.
It really infuriates me that anyone would say that it is OK to drive with faulty brakes and that faulty brakes could not be the cause of the accident. I have had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting a squirrel who darts right in front of my car on, when no car behind me of course, and if my brakes were not kept in top notch condition the squirrel would be dead.
That is soooooo New Jersey. Aggressive and NEVER saying you are at fault.
That is why I fear driving around the block even. People like you will crash into me with your faulty brakes and claim it is my fault.
Because everyone here just grabs and grabs, greedy grabbing and refuses to take responsibility. New Jersey Transit should be taken over and managed by another company or organization ASAP. Now that is something to protest about. Big time.
A Swiss bank or business should buy NJ Transit. Model the trains after the beautiful European trains, safe and efficient, and hire QUALIFIED people to run them.
The Swiss should have all the supervisory jobs. No more Jersey excuses.
How about when that NJT official chose to park all the trains at sea level in Hoboken just before Sandy.
I wonder if that was intentional or moronic.
The guy probably still works there or in FL collected his pension…
Government waste.
