Fair Lawn NJ, The Borough of Fair Lawn is reflecting on the extraordinary life of one of its most dedicated public servants. Former Police Chief Robert Van Houten passed away on January 31, 2026, at the remarkable age of 103.

From the decks of Navy ships in World War II to the helm of the Fair Lawn Police Department (FLPD), Van Houten’s life was defined by a profound commitment to duty, safety, and community.

A WWII Hero and Fair Lawn Pioneer

Born in South Paterson in 1922, Van Houten belonged to the “Greatest Generation.” His journey of service began on a global scale when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served with distinction until he was injured in the line of duty in February 1945.

Returning home, he didn’t stop serving. In 1948, he became a founding member of the Fair Lawn Volunteer Ambulance Corps (FLVAC), an organization that continues to save lives in the borough today.

37 Years Behind the Badge
