RIDGEWOOD, NJ – As the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks approaches, the Village of Ridgewood is ensuring that the memory of its fallen neighbors continues to grow.
Village Manager Keith Kazmark announced this week that a significant project has been completed: the planting of new September 11th Memorial Trees in the iconic allée located between Village Hall and the Ridgewood Public Library.
A Renewal of Remembrance
The project involved replacing ailing cherry trees with a new, hardy grove of crab apple trees. These trees serve as a living tribute to the 12 Ridgewood residents who lost their lives on that tragic day in 2001.
The renewal of this “living memorial” ensures that the walkway remains a place of reflection and beauty for generations to come.
Key Project Details:
-
Funding: The project was fully funded by the Ridgewood Open Space Trust Fund, highlighting the community’s commitment to preserving its green spaces and history.
-
Execution: The Village’s Parks and Recreation Department collaborated with Downes Tree Service to source and plant the new trees.
-
Location: The historic corridor connecting the heart of the village’s civic life—the Library and Village Hall.
Countdown to the 25th Anniversary
While the trees are now in the ground, the community’s formal tribute is still to come. Village officials are already planning a dedicated ceremony for September 2026. This milestone event will mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks, providing a space for families, first responders, and residents to gather in honor of those lost.
“These trees are more than just landscaping; they are a promise to ‘Never Forget’ our friends and neighbors,” noted one local official during the announcement.
