Hackensack NJ, on a beautiful Saturday morning, the Hackensack Chapter of UNICO National held its 53rd Annual Christopher Columbus Day Celebration, bringing together the community to honor Italian American heritage and celebrate those making a difference.
UNICO National, the largest Italian American service organization in the U.S., is known for its commitment to “service above self” and the preservation of Italian American culture. Each year, the Hackensack Chapter organizes this special event to commemorate Columbus Day and recognize outstanding individuals within the community.
This year’s celebration was extra special as the Distinguished Community Service Award was presented to Vincenza Ragno-Kowal. Her dedication to volunteerism and unwavering commitment to the local community earned her this well-deserved honor. Vincenza’s work stands as a shining example of the values UNICO holds dear, embodying the spirit of selflessness and service that the organization promotes.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Ralph Contini, the chairperson of the Columbus Day event, for his efforts in putting together another successful and meaningful celebration.
Beyond the annual festivities, the Hackensack Chapter of UNICO is dedicated to raising funds for various charities and offering support in times of need. The organization’s membership is open to American men and women of Italian heritage, as well as those married to individuals of Italian heritage. With a focus on unity, service, and the upliftment of the Italian American community, UNICO is non-political and non-sectarian, welcoming members of good character to carry out its mission both locally and nationally.
This year’s Columbus Day celebration was a reminder of the strength and unity within the Italian American community, a day of pride, reflection, and looking forward to continued service in the years to come.
