The “Aldi Movement” is officially going into overdrive. As the fan-favorite discount grocer celebrates its 50th anniversary in the U.S., it has announced a monumental expansion plan for 2026

Ramsey NJ, on Monday, January 12, 2026, Aldi US CEO Atty McGrath revealed that the company will open more than 180 new stores this year across 31 states. This surge is part of a broader $9 billion investment aimed at reaching 3,200 stores nationwide by 2028.

Whether you’re a “Quarter-for-the-cart” veteran or a new shopper, here is everything you need to know about the Aldi takeover coming to a neighborhood near you.

New Frontiers: Maine and Colorado

Aldi is breaking new ground in 2026 by entering two major markets for the first time:

  • Maine: The Pine Tree State will welcome its very first Aldi in the Portland area, making Maine the 40th state for the chain.

  • Colorado: In a massive westward push, Aldi plans to open 50 stores over the next five years in the Denver and Colorado Springs markets, supported by a brand-new distribution center in Aurora.

The 2026 Digital Overhaul

It’s not just about physical buildings; Aldi is launching a redesigned website in early 2026 to modernize the “no-frills” experience. New features include:

  • Shoppable Recipes: Turn your meal plan into a cart with one click.

  • Personalized Recommendations: Tailored suggestions based on your shopping history.

  • Enhanced Nutrition Data: Easier access to ingredient and health information.

  • Streamlined Logistics: Better tools for curbside pickup and home delivery via partners like Instacart and DoorDash.

Aldi’s Growing Footprint (By the Numbers)

By the end of 2026, Aldi expects to operate nearly 2,800 stores in the U.S., trailing only Walmart and Kroger in store count. Currently operating stores in Ramsey, Wayne and Hackensack.

Aldi in the Northeast (Current Store Counts):  Pennsylvania | 171 | Maryland | 71 | | New York | 141 | New Jersey | 67 | | Virginia | 75 | Connecticut | 33 |

Strategic Moves in the Southeast and West

  • The Conversion: Aldi continues to transform the grocery landscape in the Southeast. In 2026 alone, it will convert 80 Southeastern Grocers (parent of Winn-Dixie) locations into the Aldi format.

  • Phoenix & Las Vegas: The grocer will open 10 new stores in Phoenix this year and plans to double its store count in Las Vegas by the end of the decade.

  • Supply Chain Boost: Three new distribution centers are slated for northern Florida, Phoenix, and Colorado, ensuring fresh produce and “Aldi Finds” stay stocked.

Why Is Everyone Switching to Aldi?

The data shows a massive shift in consumer behavior. In 2025 alone, Aldi attracted 17 million new customers.

“One in three U.S. households shopped at Aldi this past year,” said CEO Atty McGrath. “In 2026, we’re focused on making it even easier for customers to shop our aisles first.”

With the “Aldi Rebrand” also hitting shelves—placing the Aldi name directly on private-label products—the company is doubling down on the trust it has built over the last five decades.

  1. I’ve tried the Ramsey store several times, and although I have no complaints, I just don’t get the buzz. To me, it is a skeletonized Trader Joe’s with a definite lack of staff and little of the TJ quality, or bustle, or energy.
