UFO Over Glen Rock? The Truth Behind the Mysterious Lights Spotted Last Night

GLEN ROCK, NJ — If you looked up at the night sky over Glen Rock yesterday and thought you saw a visitor from another galaxy, you weren’t alone. Social media buzzed with reports of a UFO sighting in the area, describing a mysterious, glowing object hovering silently over the borough.

But before you start preparing for a close encounter, the Glen Rock Police Department has issued an advisory to set the record straight.

The “UFO” Identified: High-Tech Research in the Sky

The Glen Rock Police Department released an official statement to calm any nerves and prevent a flurry of 911 calls. The “unidentified” object has a very terrestrial explanation.

“Tonight a local community college that has a contract with the state will be flying a singular drone in the area for research purposes,” the GRPD advisory stated. “If you see the drone do not be alarmed—PD and the town are aware.”

While the police didn’t specify the nature of the research, the drone is part of an authorized state-contracted project. These types of flights are often used for:

  • Infrastructure inspections (checking power lines or bridges).

  • Environmental mapping and agricultural surveys.

  • Public safety testing for future emergency response programs.

Why Bergen County is a “UFO” Hotspot

It’s no surprise that residents jumped to the “alien” conclusion. Bergen County has a long and storied history of unexplained aerial phenomena. In fact, Glen Rock and neighboring towns like Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus have appeared on numerous National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) lists over the years.

Past sightings in the immediate area have included:

  • The Glen Rock Triangle: A famous report of a 300-foot triangular craft moving slowly just above the tree line.

  • The “Car-Sized Rectangle”: A black, windowless object spotted hovering over nearby Ridgewood.

  • The Route 17 Craft: A low-flying triangular object reported by drivers near the Ho-Ho-Kus border.

While last night’s “visitor” turned out to be a college research drone, the high volume of authorized drone activity in North Jersey continues to keep skywatchers on their toes.

UFO vs. Drone: How to Tell the Difference

With more research drones taking to the New Jersey skies in 2026, here is how you can spot the difference next time:

  1. Movement: Drones typically move in straight lines or hover steadily. UFOs (or UAPs) are often reported to make “impossible” maneuvers or instant stops.

  2. Sound: Most research drones emit a distinct high-pitched mechanical hum or “buzz.”

  3. Lights: Lawful drones must have FAA-compliant anti-collision lighting (flashing red/green or white strobes).
