HOBOKEN, NJ – Get ready to step back in time and explore the fascinating history of New Jersey’s railways! NJ TRANSIT is inviting the public to its historic Hoboken Terminal for a free event, “Meet Our Rail Fleet,” on Sunday, October 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. near Track 17.

This must-see event is perfect for history buffs, train enthusiasts, and families looking for a unique outing. You’ll get an up-close look at some of NJ TRANSIT’s most iconic and historic railroad equipment, including several heritage locomotives wearing the vibrant liveries of their predecessors.

Unveiling the Past: A New Heritage Locomotive Joins the Fleet

The highlight of the day will be the public unveiling of NJ TRANSIT’s newest Heritage Locomotive, GP40PH-2B No. 4202.

This stunning engine will be sporting a special paint scheme honoring the former Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines (PRSL). The locomotive, originally built in 1965 for the New York Central Railroad, now features an adapted version of the PRSL’s classic 1960s-era Dark Green Locomotive Enamel (DGLE) scheme—a true labor of love designed and applied by NJ TRANSIT’s own Rail Operations employees.

The Legacy of PRSL

The PRSL holds a significant place in South Jersey’s railroad history. Formed in 1933, it operated both passenger and freight service, notably connecting vacation travelers to popular oceanside towns like Atlantic City and Cape May. After years of dwindling ridership following the rise of other travel modes (like the Atlantic City Expressway), the PRSL was folded into Conrail in 1976. NJ TRANSIT proudly revived its legacy by restoring passenger service to Atlantic City in 1989.

More Than Just Trains: Careers and Community

The “Meet Our Rail Fleet” event isn’t just about history—it’s also about the future of New Jersey’s largest statewide public transportation system.

  • Career Opportunities: NJ TRANSIT will host a recruiting table for anyone interested in joining the ranks of its Rail Operations team. If you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding career, be sure to stop by and learn how you can help serve the next generation of riders.
  • Exclusive Merchandise: Attendees can snag exclusive, limited-edition merchandise, including shirts, posters, and calendars, celebrating New Jersey’s railroad heritage.
  • Partnerships: The event is proudly presented in conjunction with the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, the Tri-State Railway Historical Society, and the Morristown & Erie Railway.

Plan Your Trip to Hoboken Terminal

NJ TRANSIT encourages all attendees to take the train to this historic celebration!

  • You can arrive directly at Hoboken Terminal via trains on the Bergen County, Main, and Pascack Valley lines.
  • Other NJ TRANSIT rail passengers can travel to Secaucus Junction and easily transfer to Hoboken Terminal.

Important Travel Note: Service changes will be in effect that weekend due to bridge work, so be sure to check www.njtransit.com in advance to plan your itinerary. All regular fares will apply.
