Bergen County Town to be First Recipient of AKC Dog-Friendly Community Award
New York — The American Kennel Club announced its decision to recognize the Village of Ridgewood, NJ with its first-ever “AKC Dog-Friendly Community Award.”
The award presentation will take place on Saturday, February 8 at 1pm in the Saddle River County Park in Ridgewood. The Park’s “dog run” will serve as the location for the event. *
New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs (NJFDC) President Jeffrey Ball will lead the event along with representatives from the American Kennel Club. They will be joined by Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn, Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck and other members of the Ridgewood Village Council and Government. Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan also plans to attend.
The event will be open to the public and will be followed by a reception 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Ridgewood Village Hall Community Center, which is at 131 North Maple Street.
People are encouraged to bring their dogs to the event at the park.
Background
The American Kennel Club (AKC) recently established a new national award, the “AKC Dog-Friendly Community Award,” to honor dog-friendly communities for actions taken to promote responsible dog ownership in that community. These actions could include establishing a responsible dog ownership committee, hosting events promoting responsible dog ownership, holding community educational programs or any other actions that advance the well-being of dogs and the residents of the town.
In December, the AKC announced its decision to make Ridgewood the first recipient of the award.
* In the case of inclement weather, the event may be moved to the Ridgewood Village Hall.

How’s it possible to be a dog friendly communmity when dogs are banned from all Village parks?
Most towns ban dogs from there parks, whats new.
Yes I was wondering that myself. Next Valley Hospital will want the Council to enact a law that banned people from walking there dogs on the sidewalks around the hospital.
Maybe if people cleaned up after their dogs, in the streets, sidewalks and parks, they might be welcome. Every time I walk my dog (with various plastic bags to pick up the dog poop) I am constantly seeing what the other inconsiderate dog owners fail to pick up.
Most towns are not dog friendly, what’s new.
Dogs are NOT banned from parks in Hoboken and Montcalir. Since we so much want to be like Hoboken and Montclair maybe we should take notice.
The problem is that people bring their dog to the fields (sometimes the tennis courts!) and let them off the leash. People do ‘t bring their dog to a field to walk it on a leash.
Everyone does not love your pet a d I have seen dog poop on the field where my daughter plays softball. The dogs also tear up the grass. If you get a pet then you should have a plan for exercising it, not at a park that was created for people to use.
Keep your dog in the bark park and I promise that I will never visit.
The anti-dog comments probably come from people who leave soda cans and chips bags all over the fields. Many of us bring our dogs to Brookside Field. There is no dog poop there, but the human garbage is staggering.
#9 you can’t just put two unrelated things in one sentence and pretend that you made a valid point.
There is a good reason that your pet is not allowed on village athletic fields. I have seen a man exercise his pooch on the tennis courts in the morning, I don’t know why he would do this.
Keep your pets on a leash.
Some these posters should keep their kids on a leash
