WESTWOOD, NJ – Patriotism and local achievement converged early yesterday morning as Westwood celebrated a major new addition to its Veterans’ Memorial Park. The Township dedicated a powerful memorial to the U.S. Navy Armed Services, marked by the unveiling of a genuine ship’s anchor.

This significant project was the culmination of an extraordinary effort by fledgling Eagle Scout Michael Greco of Troop 321, making the memorial not just a tribute to the Navy, but a testament to community spirit and leadership.

A Milestone for the Community and the Navy

The dedication ceremony was well-attended and perfectly timed, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy. The new installation ensures that the Navy’s deep history and vital contributions are permanently recognized at the beating heart of Westwood, NJ.

The event kicked off with welcoming remarks and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Michael’s older brother, Eagle Scout AJ Greco.

Westwood Mayor Ray Arroyo, who spoke at the ceremony, highlighted the emotion of the moment:

“My thoughts went to what might have been the original christening of the WWII LST that this living piece of history once serviced, now come full circle. With its ‘hook dropped’ in its final port of call, Veterans Park.”

High-Ranking Military Guests Honor the Project

The ceremony featured powerful guest speakers, underscoring the importance of the project to the Navy community:

  • Keynote Speaker U.S. Navy Command Master Chief Michael Bonifer (assigned to the State Department) delivered a stirring address, expressing profound admiration for Michael’s work and gratitude for Westwood’s embrace of Navy recognition.
  • U.S. Navy Petty Officer Isaiah Rudisill also offered congratulatory remarks.

Special thanks were extended to Councilwoman Erin Collins for securing the attendance of Master Chief Bonifer, her cousin, who provided a truly unforgettable keynote.

A Fitting Unveiling for a Piece of History

The event concluded with the official “launch” of the anchor. Assisted by his proud father, the newest Eagle Scout, Michael Greco, performed a symbolic christening—safely, but fittingly, breaking a bottle of bubbly over the anchor’s shaft.

This genuine piece of naval history, which once serviced a WWII LST (Landing Ship, Tank), now serves as a lasting symbol of courage and dedication in Westwood’s Veterans Park.

Congratulations to Eagle Scout Michael Rocco Greco and his entire, proud family for a job exceptionally well done!
