Amid growing recognition that some students are going hungry, Rutgers-New Brunswick is the latest university in New Jersey to open a food pantry
Ramen noodles. Priced around 13 cents a bag, they’ve been a staple of college life for decades, helping the archetypal “starving student” afford tuition, housing, books, and the occasional beer. But the typical shrug in reaction to this paradigm is giving way to real concern as institutions of higher learning realize that hunger on campus is a serious problem that’s hurting students’ ability to learn.
This summer, Rutgers University-New Brunswick became the latest of at least five New Jersey colleges and universities — and more than 300 nationally — to install a free food pantry on campus. So far, about 30 students have taken advantage of Rutgers’ non-perishable goods. But the need is far greater.
That’s all well and good, but what I want to know – are these food pantries going to be gender neutral, free speech safe zones?
Ramen noodles–sounds like a serious case of cultural appropriation
$100 per month for cell phone service, of course there’s no money left for food.
S. Frapz at 4:49 makes a good point. So many people can’t function without and are addicted to smart phones. Are they necessities? Not sure on that … could students manage without expensive cell service/ Is there a special student rate available?
Ok people, let me see if I have this right. First off why is there a archetypal student to begin with? So they can pay absurd tuition costs? Pay for textbooks that are a complete ripoff? And now you want the cell providers to subsidize the cost of their service with a special rate so they have the cash to pay the university??? Cash to pay the campus bookstore that’s stealing from them? And to add insult to injury they can’t get a decent meal? Wtf is wrong with this picture.
Vote for Hillary… then everyone gets free education, free Obama phones, free food, free money ($20/hr minimum wage), etc. all provided (for free) by the magical mystical government.
.
The only downside is that a vote for Hillary also get you less freedom – speech and otherwise…
