Mahwah NJ , a quiet Wednesday morning in Mahwah, NJ, was broken by the sound of sirens as a serious fire erupted in a residential building. At approximately 11:25 AM on 10/29/2025, multiple Mahwah Fire Department companies were dispatched near Faulkner Court for reports of a fire showing from a roof.

Upon the arrival of Mahwah Police and fire units, the incident was quickly confirmed to be an active, working structure fire located in the attic of a three-story residential building, later identified as being in the Mark Twain condo complex , arson suspected . Photos from the scene showed visible smoke billowing from the roof, prompting immediate action and a full-scale emergency response.
Coordinated Attack and Mutual Aid Rallies
Successfully tackling an attic fire requires a heavy and coordinated effort. All five Mahwah fire companies—Co.’s 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5—were called to the scene, supported by Mahwah EMS and Mahwah Police.
- Immediate Action: Firefighters went straight to work, deploying lines to attack the attic blaze while simultaneously ensuring the building was evacuated for safety.
- Mutual Aid Support: The severity of the fire triggered a mutual aid response, bringing in departments from neighboring towns. The Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department‘s Rescue unit, for example, was dispatched to the scene, where crews assisted with the difficult task of overhaul—tearing apart walls and ceilings to ensure all hidden pockets of fire were extinguished.
- Rapid Control: Thanks to the “great job” by all involved, the fire was quickly contained and extinguished. All fire units were back in service within about two hours after the initial call.
Most importantly, there were no reported injuries in the incident.

The Importance of Community Support and Fire Safety
The successful outcome of this incident is a testament to the dedication of the Mahwah Fire Department and the effectiveness of the regional mutual aid system. These volunteers risk their lives for the community, and their rapid response prevented a devastating loss.
For residents living in multi-story or condo complexes:
- Check Smoke Detectors: Ensure your smoke detectors are tested monthly and have working batteries.
- Know Your Escape Route: Review and practice your building’s emergency evacuation plan.
- Support Volunteers: Remember that these companies run on the dedication of volunteers. As the Waldwick VFD noted, your support does not go unnoticed!
