Rand Paul: Supreme Court should review NSA programs
By Justin Sink – 08/18/13 09:46 AM ET
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Sunday called for a Supreme Court review of the constitutionality of the National Security Agency’s top-secret surveillance programs, arguing that congressional hearings and new safeguards announced by President Obama might not be sufficient to ensure privacy rights.
“I think the constitutionality of these programs needs to be questioned, and there needs to be a Supreme Court decision that looks at whether what they are doing is constitutional or not,” Paul told “Fox News Sunday.”
The Washington Post reported this week that the NSA broke privacy rules or overstepped its legal authority thousands of times per year, according to an internal audit revealed by former defense contractor Edward Snowden.
Paul blasted the administration in light of the revelation, saying President Obama “fundamentally misunderstands the constitutional separation of powers.”
Google outage reportedly caused big drop in global traffic
Most Google services, including search, were down for a few minutes Friday, prompting much of the Internet to start the weekend early…and then quickly change its mind.

For a very brief few minutes on Friday you may have noticed some Google services, most notably search, appeared to be down. If not, maybe you noticed the ensuing freak-out across Twitter and the rest of the Internet.
At first glance the flash outage was little more than an opportunity for a few good one-liners and a chance to actually stand up from the keyboard and walk around for a few minutes. If we had connected nanobots floating around in our bloodstreams, certainly they would have registered a worldwide uptick in caffeine intake during those few moments.
As it turns out though, Google’s downtime did appear to have global, measurable repercussions, according to analytics firm GoSquared, which estimates that it caused a 40 percent drop in global traffic during a five-minute window:

Atlas Shrugged contains both businessmen who are heroes, such as Hank Rearden and Dagny Taggart, and businessmen who are villains, such as Orren Boyle and James Taggart. What are the differences between these types of businessmen? Is the story a celebration of business? How does this issue relate to the wider themes in the novel?
Hank Rearden says that the killer tenet which destroys a man is the soul-body dichotomy—that this wrong idea has been the source of his life’s pain. What do you think this dichotomy is? How has it wreaked havoc in Hank’s life?
What is the meaning of money to Francisco? To James Taggart?

Australian scientists discover the secret to hydrating beer
Australian researches have found a way to improve the hydrating qualities of beer, without compromising on taste. By adding electrolytes to the amber ale, the researchers from a Queensland university may even have found a way to avoid a post-drink hangover.
By Courtney Greatrex on 16 August, 2013 12:18 pm
SAY goodbye to the dreaded Monday morning hangover, thanks to researchers from a Queensland university who have discovered it may be possible to improve the hydrating effects of beer.
Since the beginning of time, it seems sipping on a frosty cold beer has been a necessity on a scorching hot day. This can be counter-intuitive at times, given alcohol actually increases dehydration and leads to drunkenness, risky behavior and eventually, the hangover.
However, researchers from Griffith University’s Health Institute may have answered every Australians prayers. They have found that by adding electrolytes, a common ingredient found in sports drinks, and reducing the alcohol content could make a beer more refreshing than ever.
As part of the study the Institute manipulated the electrolyte levels of two commercial beers, one that was regular strength and one that was light. They then gave those two beers to volunteers who had been heavily exercising just before consumption to test their fluid recovery.

Attorneys general raise privacy concerns over ObamaCare navigators
By Jordy Yager – 08/17/13 10:30 AM ET
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi argued late Friday that new hires under ObamaCare could threaten the private information of people trying to get health insurance.
Bondi said that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is making it easier for someone to be hired as a so-called navigator, cutting back on background checks and eliminating a fingerprinting requirement, which could make it easier for a person’s private information to fall into the wrong hands.
“Because of time constraints, HHS [is] cutting back on the requirement to become a navigator, meaning they’re not going to be doing background checks. They’re not going to be fingerprinting these people,” said Bondi in an interview with Fox.
“And it’s more than navigators. It’s people that assist the navigators. Now, these navigators will have our consumers throughout the country’s most personal and private information — tax return information, Social Security information. And our biggest fear, of course, is identity theft.”

NJ Transit investigating racial-profiling complaint in Paramus incident

The Record
NJ Transit’s civil rights division is investigating a black customer’s complaint that he was racially profiled by a bus driver who refused to talk to him and instead called Paramus police — who told him he couldn’t board the driver’s bus because he made her “nervous.”
Alonza Robertson, a 45-year-old media relations manager at a New York accounting association, said he was humiliated, made to feel like less of a man and illegally denied access to public accommodations, in what he believes was a racial profiling incident.
He said the bus, filled with passengers, pulled off, leaving him in an empty parking lot on a Sunday in 85-degree weather, and forced to pay for a $45 cab ride home.
NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. said the agency is aware of Robertson’s complaint and is investigating. The agency “takes these allegations seriously and upon receipt of the customer complaint our agency immediately launched a full investigation — led by NJ Transit’s Office of Civil Rights,” he said. “This investigation continues at this time.”
He said the customer service department also is involved, and the agency is looking into why police were called to the scene.

Sen. Jeff Sessions accuses the FCC of missing ‘Obamaphone’ fraud
By Brendan Sasso – 08/15/13 12:07 PM ET
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) accused the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday of failing to prevent fraud and abuse in its cellphone subsidy program for the poor.
Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, sent a letter to Acting FCC Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn, demanding more information about what the FCC is doing to ensure that only eligible people receive subsidies.
He pointed to a recent article in the National Review in which the writer enrolled in the problem despite being ineligible.
