Middletown Township Public Library creates Job Help Center for Local Job seekers
By Alyssa Rosen, Middletown Township Public Library

When I first started working as a librarian for the Middletown Township Public Library in Monmouth County, New Jersey in August 2010, I received what I considered to be an odd assignment—to revamp the library programs that help people find jobs.  As someone who worked at libraries since I was 14, it hadn’t occurred even to me that libraries could help job seekers.  I sat at my desk for the first few weeks of my new job staring at the computer screen, trying to figure out what kind of events and programs we could offer that could possibly help someone find a job.

Then, I discovered a list of email addresses another librarian put together, of people interested in job information.  I sent out an email (BCC, of course, to protect the privacy of the recipients), asking people what they wanted to learn about.  They answered that they wanted tips on resume writing, interviewing, and classes teaching computer skills.  We had the benefit of a 15 station computer lab, so I began working with the other librarians to expand our schedule of computer classes.  I brought in speakers to talk about how the process of interviewing had changed since ten, or even, five years ago.  I taught classes on how to research jobs online, and helped guide people through résumé revision using well-regarded books and websites.  Everything was free and open to the public.

The library’s foundation was generous enough to provide me with a budget– so I was able to pay speakers, and do extras like set out some coffee and cake to life the spirits of the job seekers who attended events.  At every event, I passed around a legal pad, and asked if the attendees wanted to join a jobs email list. Then, I sent out emails every week or so about upcoming events at the library, local job fairs, etc., that might be helpful.  In 2011, the Job Help Center, as we now called ourselves, received a grant from the New Jersey Library Association.  We began to reach out to help local entrepreneurs, and provide financial literacy classes.   By the spring of 2012, the Job Help Center was off the ground: we had over 200 people on the e-mail list, and some well-celebrated job “landings,” by Job Help Center participants, who seemed to have formed a virtual community.

Want a viable downtown : building department has been a nightmare

The building department has been a nightmare for all residents for years. An audit of the department was completed about ten years ago. Recommendations were made and ignored. The tiger team should look at the report.

Now that the tiger team has turned their attention to the downtown business district they are no longer just a financial advisory committee. A viable downtown should be supported but the needs of the business district are not always the same as the needs of the taxpayers. The business owners are not all resident taxpayers. That being said, I think that the Guild is doing a fantastic job. Their activities encourage people of all ages to come to the business district.

Now is the time to focus on the needs of the taxpayers. A recent article in the Record highlighted the fact that property taxes are an important part of the home buying decision. What about discounts for retired residents? If someone has lived here 10, 15 20 or more years there should be incentive for them to stay. A house with 4 bedrooms could bring 3 new students into the schools. If that homeowner had a 10k exemption (incentive) they might stay in town. It would be a net savings for the village. Win-win. Maybe there is someone in the village with financial modeling experience who could help to put a number on the costs and benefits of this type of program. Those planned condos in town do not appeal to me. They will probably cost as much as a home, have maintenance costs and pay the same taxes as a home.

Maybe encouraging (incentivizing) seniors to move to smaller “starter” homes in the village is the answer. The downside of this is that you could create neighborhoods of senior citizens since the smaller homes tend to be clustered together. The upside is that it could be like our own “active senior” community within the village. The block parties would be a lot different.

I don’t know that the solution is, but my tentative plan is to leave when my youngest graduates in about 8 years. Most of my tax bill goes to pay for schools that I will no longer be using. The next homeowner can pick up the tab. If the downtown is a mecca when I move then I will visit for dinner from time to time – just like everyone else

Emails show FBI investigating Sen. Bob Menendez for sleeping with underage Dominican prostitutes
1:52 AM 01/25/2013

Documents published online for the first time Thursday indicate that the FBI opened an inquiry into New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez on August 1, 2012, focusing on repeated trips he took to the Dominican Republic with longtime campaign contributor and Miami eye doctor Salomon Melgen. TheDC reported in November that Menendez purchased the service of prostitutes in that Caribbean nation at a series of alcohol-fueled sex parties.

The documents, which The Daily Caller had obtained hours earlier from an anonymous source, also indicate that Carrie Levine, research director at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), was alerted on April 9, 2012 to Menendez’s habit of paying for sex while outside the United States

Gov issues new building rules for post-Sandy construction

Gov issues new building rules for post-Sandy construction
January 25th, 2013
CIANJ

Ridgewood NJ, Gov. Chris Christie issued new standards for building height elevations – a critical step in the post-Sandy rebuilding effort. The standards follow the recommendations of the state Department of Environmental Protection and are expected to comply with the rules of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The governor said he took the extraordinary step because if the state waited on a final decision from FEMA it could take up more than a year and would delay the rebuilding effort. The guidelines call for higher elevations and will reduce insurance premiums.

Christie said he adopted the regulations to help “residents and businesses who have endured so much, to get back on their feet while at the same time ensuring that rebuilding occurs as quickly as possible, without costly red tape slowing this process down for our families and small businesses.”

More details on the new building standards are available on the governor’s office website. https://www.state.nj.us/governor/news/news/552013/approved/20130124d.html

HACKENSACK — As the No. 5 bowler in the Maroon lineup, it seemed natural for Zach Flicker to bookend their day at the Bergen County boys bowling tournament with “5-baggers.”

The Ridgewood High School senior opened last Saturday’s event at Bowler City by recording strikes on his first five throws. He then struck five times in a row near the end of his sixth and final game, a team-high 236, to highlight a 10th-place individual series of 1,245.

His efforts paced Ridgewood (5,468) to a sixth-place showing in the overall standings and fourth in the Groups 3-4 bracket, the squad’s best county-tournament finish under head coach Dick Bennett. Hackensack (5,866) won the Groups 3-4 title and placed second overall to first-time champ Glen Rock (6,022).

Feds tell schools to include disabled students in athletics

WASHINGTON — Breaking new ground, the U.S. Education Department is telling schools they must include students with disabilities in sports programs or provide equal alternative options. The directive, reminiscent of the Title IX expansion of athletic opportunities for women, could bring sweeping changes to school budgets and locker rooms for years to come. Associated Press

Ridgewood Police Due to the cold weather remember to check on their neighbors

Ridgewood NJ, Due to the cold weather, the Ridgewood Police Department would like to remind residents to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly and those with special needs. Make sure they’ve turned on the heat in their homes and that they have plenty of food, water and any medications they might need.

It’s also a good idea to help them with household chores, like taking out the trash and shoveling snow. If you know of someone who may need assistance or you are concerned about, please call the Police Department @ 201-652-3900 and we will send someone to check on them.

During the final varsity round of the Northern New Jersey History Bee last Saturday at Ridgewood High School, 1999 RHS graduate and 2005 Jeopardy phenom David Madden read the two remaining finalists their last questions.

A Millburn High School student won thanks to his knowledge of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, but it was clear during the final that dozens of student-participants sitting in the audience shared a high level of history knowledge.

The Ridgewood News

Editor’s note – Michael Parloff, longtime principal flute at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, is presenting the Grammy award winning pianist Richard Goode at his Parlance Chamber Concert this Sunday afternoon, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m. at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood for the second All-Beethoven Concert.

Ridgewood News: Can you tell our readers more about Richard Goode and the concert.

Michael Parloff: It is an honor and a thrill to welcome Richard Goode, who is widely acknowledged to be one of the most remarkable pianists of our time and a consummate interpreter of the music of Beethoven. Of his recordings of the complete 32-sonata cycle, the New York Times wrote:

“It is hard to think of any other artist on record who has been all at once technically, temperamentally and intellectually as suited to the challenges of these sonatas as Mr. Goode is. These beautifully engineered recordings may well become a landmark.”

Free dispatch service may not be best for Ridgewood

The notion of a free alternative to Ridgewood’s Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch (NWBCD) triggered recent discussion among local officials and residents, including some who are wary that the outside substitute might leave village taxpayers with a hefty burden to shoulder in future years.

Bergen County’s proposal to offer full dispatching and 911 services at no cost to all 70 towns has already piqued the interest of dozens in the area, including several that subscribe to NWBCD. Known widely as Central Dispatch, the Pease Library-based operation currently provides a multitude of dispatching services to 11 municipalities in addition to host communities Ridgewood and Glen Rock.

“Experts” expound upon proposed development in Ridgewood

The Ridgewood News

Planning and traffic experts retained by developer John Saraceno suggest that the mixed-use development proposed along North Maple Avenue will add a token amount to Ridgewood’s crowded schools and congested roads, but the minimal impact on those hot-button issues will be outweighed by the overall site improvement.

If built, the project known as The Enclave will bring 52 luxury-style apartments to the 1.37-acre plot in the Central Business District. The complex, which tops out at four stories plus a parking garage, also features 28,000 square feet for retail purposes and incorporates the existing Sealfons |building.

The Enclave is one of four downtown housing proposals whose applications are currently before the Planning Board.

The 137,000-square-foot Ridgewood Station development, planned for the former Ken Smith Motors property, contains the most proposed housing units with 114. The Dayton, an upscale garden apartment complex at the old Brogan Cadillac lot, calls for 106 dwellings. Chestnut Village, if approved, would bring roughly half the number of apartments as the Dayton to the former motor vehicle inspection site on Chestnut Street.

Planning Board members are studying the four proposals for a broader project, the developers’ request for a Master Plan amendment that will essentially create one or more overlay zones in the CBD.

town_garage_theridgewoodblog.net_

Concerns over the effect that the proposed housing plans will have on Ridgewood’s schools and traffic were at the forefront of Wednesday’s Planning Board meeting. Speaking specifically about The Enclave, planner Joseph Burgis testified that the proposal will likely produce 105 residents, eight of whom will be public school children (PSC).
