Ridgewood NJ, a groundbreaking new study reveals that artificial intelligence is hitting early-career workers the hardest—causing a double-digit drop in job opportunities for those just entering the workforce.

A recent paper, “Canaries in the Coal Mine? Six Facts about the Recent Employment Effects of Artificial Intelligence,” analyzed payroll data from the largest software provider in the U.S. to uncover how AI is reshaping employment. The findings are stark:

  • Jobs most exposed to AI disruption include software developers, customer support, clerical roles, writing and media, and business analysts.

  • Since 2022, workers ages 22–25 in these AI-exposed fields have seen a 13% relative decline in employment.

  • Meanwhile, overall U.S. job growth continues to climb—meaning young professionals in AI-sensitive roles are disproportionately falling behind.

Why This Matters

The Economist’s Mike Bird summed it up bluntly: “Since the widespread adoption of generative AI, early-career workers (ages 22–25) in the most AI-exposed occupations have experienced a 13 percent relative decline in employment.”

That’s a devastating blow for a generation trying to establish financial independence. While the economy overall is still adding jobs, AI-driven displacement is carving out a K-shaped recovery—where some thrive while others are left behind.

The Silver Lining: Compete, Don’t Complain

Despite the gloomy data, experts say the shift also presents historic opportunities for those willing to adapt. AI is lowering barriers to entrepreneurship, making it easier than ever to:

  • Launch a business with minimal upfront cost.

  • Build and sell digital products and services.

  • Automate tasks that once required an entire workforce.

“Rather than praying someone is going to hire you, young people can use AI to create jobs for themselves,” said investor and entrepreneur Anthony Pompliano.

The Bottom Line

AI is already transforming the job market—and for young workers, the impact is immediate and painful. But just as technology is destroying traditional roles, it’s also creating new pathways for independence and innovation.

👉 The choice is clear: adapt and master AI tools, or risk being left behind.
