OAKLAND, NJ — The Oakland Police Department is urging residents to stay alert after a mama bear and her three cubs were recently spotted roaming the south end of town. While bear sightings are not uncommon in New Jersey, safety remains the top priority for both residents and wildlife.
🐻 What to Do If You See a Bear
Bears generally avoid humans, but accidental encounters can happen. Here’s how to stay safe:
✅ DO:
-
Stay calm and avoid approaching the bears, especially the cubs.
-
Give them space—a protective mama bear can be very defensive.
-
Secure trash cans, bird feeders, and remove pet food from outside to avoid attracting bears.
-
Keep children and pets indoors if a bear is nearby.
🚫 DON’T:
-
Never try to feed or interact with bears.
-
Don’t run—this may trigger a chase instinct.
-
Don’t block their path or corner them.
🚶♀️ Encountering a Bear While Hiking or Walking?
-
Make loud noises (talk, clap, or sing) to avoid surprising the bear.
-
Stay upright and avoid sudden movements.
-
Slowly back away and leave the area.
📣 Oakland Police Statement
“We want to remind residents that black bears are part of our natural environment. Sightings, especially during the warmer months, are not uncommon. However, it’s essential to remain cautious, respect their space, and take preventive measures to reduce interactions,” said a spokesperson from the Oakland Police Department.
🛡️ Keep Your Home and Neighborhood Bear-Safe:
-
Use bear-proof trash bins
-
Store grills, pet food, and bird feeders indoors
-
Educate children about bear safety
By staying informed and prepared, we can ensure a safe coexistence with our local wildlife. If you observe unusual or threatening bear behavior, please contact the Oakland Police Department or New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.
