Plymouth Rock Ma, the first Native American to contact the Pilgrims, Samoset, asked for beer on March 16, 1621 He had learned English from fishermen and traders who had visited the area before the Pilgrims arrived. The Pilgrims, however, did not have beer to give him and instead offered him other food and “strong water”.

  • Samoset’s request: Samoset, an Abenaki sagamore, greeted the Pilgrims in English and asked for a beer.
  • Reason for his knowledge: He had learned English through contact with fishermen who frequented the Maine coast.
  • Pilgrims’ response: The Pilgrims did not have beer but gave him strong water (likely brandy), biscuit, butter, cheese, pudding, and a piece of mallard.
  • Significance: His request showed not only his familiarity with English customs but also the long history of cultural exchange that already existed between Native Americans and Europeans.
