BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — With temperatures expected to climb above 90 degrees this week, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco announced in a Facebook post that the county has opened five cooling centers to help residents stay safe during the heatwave.

The cooling centers will operate from Tuesday, July 15 through Friday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents are also encouraged to check local municipal cooling centers—such as libraries, recreation centers, and senior facilities—before traveling to county facilities to avoid overcrowding.

“Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are very real risks during high temperatures,” Tedesco said. “We’re asking everyone to stay safe, hydrate, and take advantage of these cooling centers if needed.”

🌡 Extreme Heat Safety: What You Need to Know

The National Weather Service forecasts highs of 89, 91, and 92 degrees for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in Bergen County. The county strongly advises:

Avoid outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun is strongest.
Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses if you must go outside.
Stay hydrated—drink water frequently, even if you’re not thirsty.
Check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals.

🐾 Important Safety Reminders

  • NEVER leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a moment. Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly and become fatal.

  • Lock parked vehicles so children cannot accidentally climb inside while playing.

  • Pets are welcome at county cooling centers but must be leashed or crated.
