East Rutherford NJ, The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially narrowed on Friday, December 5, 2025, as the tournament draw took center stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. For soccer fans across North Jersey, the draw—which determined the 12 groups of four teams—was appointment viewing, with local gatherings, including one at Varitage Brew Works in Bloomfield, celebrating the selections.

With the FIFA World Cup Final set for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on July 19, 2026, the entire region is gearing up for a historic six weeks of action.

The Draw is Complete: What Happens Next?

The highly anticipated draw assigned 48 participating teams into 12 groups. While 42 teams have secured their spots, the remaining 6 will be determined by upcoming playoff tournaments.

  • Tournament Dates: The World Cup kicks off on June 11, 2026, and concludes with the final match on July 19.

  • Match Schedule: The day following the draw, FIFA is slated to announce the official schedule, including the dates, times, and specific North Jersey locations for each of the eight matches the region is slated to host.

Bergen County Prepares for a Global Influx

With the tournament just over six months away, preparations are in full swing across Bergen County to capitalize on the massive global event. The goal is two-fold: ensure a smooth experience for the tens of thousands of expected visitors and help local businesses benefit from the massive economic opportunity.

County officials are coordinating efforts spanning:

  • Economic Strategy: Helping local restaurants, main streets, and hotels prepare for the influx of tourists.

  • Community Coordination: Planning entertainment and activations for both residents and international visitors.

Overpeck Park to Host Mega Fan Fest Activation

A key component of the county’s preparation is the official partnership with the Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce’s Flag Cities program. This program will host five major fan fest activations across the area.

The highlight event is scheduled for Sunday, June 14th, 2026, at Overpeck County Park, where residents and visitors can join together to cheer on their favorite teams and celebrate the world’s game.

What to expect at the Flag City Fan Fests:

  • Live Broadcasts: World Cup games shown on large-scale LED screens.

  • Global Cuisine: A variety of food trucks and international cuisine and beverage vendors.

  • Entertainment: Beer gardens, live music, DJs, and community performances.

  • Family Fun: Kids’ zones with family-friendly activities, soccer gear vendors, and immersive fan experiences.
