PARAMUS, NJ — A new era of emergency medicine has arrived in Bergen County. Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, New Jersey’s largest hospital, officially cut the ribbon on a massive expansion of its Emergency Department (ED) on February 11, 2026.
This transformative project more than doubles the hospital’s capacity, increasing treatment beds from 19 to 47, and introduces a first-of-its-kind “stigma-free” environment for mental health crises.
Why This Expansion Is a Game-Changer for New Jersey
At a time when wait times are skyrocketing across the state, Bergen New Bridge is bucking the trend. The expanded ED is designed to address the “realities of today” by offering:
-
Wait Times of 5–10 Minutes: Maintaining one of the fastest response times in the region.
-
47 Total Treatment Beds: Up from 19, allowing the hospital to handle unprecedented patient volumes.
-
Equity-First Care: A cornerstone of the hospital’s strategy to serve communities disproportionately affected by chronic illness and barriers to care.
Introducing the EmPATH Model: A New Standard for Mental Health
The centerpiece of the expansion is the EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing) unit. Unlike traditional, chaotic ER settings, EmPATH offers:
-
Living-Room Style Spaces: Calm, therapeutic environments designed to stabilize patients in crisis.
-
Stigma-Free Design: Moving behavioral health out of clinical isolation and into healing-focused areas.
-
Dedicated Experts: Staffed by behavioral health specialists to ensure the “right care in the right setting.”
Specialized Care for Every Generation
The facility wasn’t just built for capacity; it was built for people. The new ED includes specialized zones for vulnerable populations:
-
Pediatric & Geriatric Areas: Age-appropriate treatment zones to ensure comfort for children and seniors.
-
Sensory-Sensitive Spaces: Quiet, low-stimulation environments specifically designed for neurodivergent patients.
-
Certified Autism Center: Further solidifying the hospital’s commitment to inclusive emergency services.
Leadership Perspective: “More Than a Ribbon Cutting”
“This is a modern, thoughtfully designed Emergency Department built for the realities of today and the needs of tomorrow,” said Deborah Visconi, President and CEO of Bergen New Bridge Medical Center. “It means faster access to high-quality care delivered with dignity, compassion, and equity.”
Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale G. Caldwell echoed this sentiment, noting that the facility is a direct solution to the rising behavioral health needs across the state.
