Ridgewood NJ, in a powerful display of community engagement and dedication to safety, members of the Ridgewood Fire Department and Ridgewood Police Department recently returned to the Ridgewood Public Library to host their annual safety presentation for students in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

This collaborative program is a vital resource designed to ensure that every resident, regardless of language barrier, has access to critical, potentially life-saving emergency information.

Bridging the Gap with Critical Safety Information

The specialized presentation covers essential topics that are crucial for new residents and ESL students navigating life in the United States and within the Ridgewood community. Key areas covered included:

  • Calling 9-1-1: Clear instructions on when and how to contact emergency services, and what vital information to provide.
  • Interacting with Police: Guidance on rights and procedures if pulled over by a police officer.
  • Recognizing Phone Scams: Education on common scams targeting residents, helping to protect families from fraud.
  • Fire Safety: Core fire prevention tips and what to do in the event of a household fire.

A Commitment to an Inclusive, Safe Community

Fire Chief John T. Judge underscored the importance of the ongoing initiative, stating, “We want every member of our community to feel confident and safe in an emergency. This program helps to ensure that all residents have access to potentially life-saving information.”

The presentation reinforces the commitment of Ridgewood’s first responders to an inclusive and prepared community. By breaking down language and cultural barriers, the program empowers families to handle emergencies confidently.
