Dog Saves Family During Brazen Cranford Road Home Invasion and Car Theft

Glen Rock NJ,. A Monday morning in Glen Rock took a terrifying turn when a local family awoke to find their home had been breached and their luxury SUV stolen.

At approximately 4:30 AM on January 19, 2026, four masked suspects successfully infiltrated a residence on Cranford Road. While the homeowners and their children slept upstairs, the intruders scoured the main floor, basement, and garage, even venturing halfway up the stairs to the second floor.

The “Key Fob” Hunt: How it Happened

According to Glen Rock Police Chief Dean Ackermann, the incident was a targeted attempt to acquire a high-end vehicle.

  • The Entry: The suspects entered through a rear sliding glass door. Police noted there were no signs of forced entry, suggesting the door may have been left unlocked.

  • The Search: Once inside, the group systematically searched the home. They successfully located the residents’ wallets and, crucially, a concealed key fob for the family’s 2024 BMW X5.

  • The “Near Miss”: Surveillance footage showed the suspects initially tried to start the BMW in the driveway but failed. They then entered the home specifically to find the keys.

Awakened by the Dog

The family remained unaware of the intruders until their dog began to bark. One resident rushed to the window just in time to see their 2024 BMW X5 speeding out of the driveway. While the homeowner called 911, the suspects fled the scene. Fortunately, there was no physical confrontation between the family and the burglars.

A Growing Trend in Bergen County

This “home-entry-for-keys” tactic is becoming an alarming trend across New Jersey. Organized theft crews are no longer just checking car doors; they are entering occupied homes specifically to find key fobs for luxury brands like BMW, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz.

Ongoing Investigation: The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation has processed the scene for evidence. As of Tuesday, January 20, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active.

How to Protect Your Home & Vehicle

Police are urging residents to treat their key fobs like cash or jewelry.

  1. Lock All Entry Points: Ensure sliding doors and windows are deadbolted every night.

  2. Hide Your Fobs: Do not leave key fobs on kitchen counters or “key hooks” near the front door. Suspects often look for these first.

  3. Use Faraday Bags: These inexpensive pouches block the signal of your key fob, preventing “relay attacks” used to start cars without the physical key.

  4. Garages Matter: If possible, park high-end vehicles inside a locked garage to remove them from plain sight.
