Ridgewood NJ, great news for families in Ridgewood! The Village has officially begun work on an exciting new feature at Habernickel Park: a state-of-the-art, ADA-accessible playground.
The transformation is already underway, and the Village is looking forward to unveiling this fantastic community feature this fall!
This major upgrade will replace the park’s existing wooden structure with a modern, inclusive design specifically engineered to accommodate children with disabilities, ensuring a fun and welcoming space for all of Ridgewood’s youth.
Funding Secured: State Grant and Capital Budget Power the Project
This essential community initiative is being brought to life through a combination of external and local funding:
- State Grant: The project received a significant boost with a $68,000 State grant.
- Capital Budget: The remaining costs are slated to be covered by the Village’s proposed 2025 capital budget.
The Ridgewood Parks & Recreation Department has been the driving force behind the plan, highlighting Ridgewood’s strong commitment to creating truly accessible recreational spaces for every resident.
“We are thrilled to introduce this project, which will provide a safe and inclusive play area for children in our community,” officials stated, emphasizing the importance of this inclusive upgrade.
A Bigger Conversation: Accessibility vs. Private Use at the Pavilion
While the new playground is a universally celebrated addition, the announcement surfaces a related, lingering discussion concerning the park’s pavilion.
The new playground will enhance Habernickel Park, which also features the park pavilion. The core debate remains: Since the pavilion is a taxpayer-funded public amenity, should its use ever be prioritized for a private business (like Healthbarn USA), or should public facilities exclusively serve the general community?
As the Village finalizes funding and moves toward the official grand opening , the community is excited to gain a new, fully inclusive playground, while the conversation about balanced use of public park facilities continues.

Beware of the coyote outbreak. The wooded area and stream could lure these predators in. A dog was just fatally attacked in hohokus.
Stop cluttering open space. We need more of it, not less.
Yes. Beware of that open space tax it could be to facilitate more private businesses for friends. This park is over used by a private businesses and that’s who the playground and pavilion are for. Favors. Mark my words our VM will allow use of this to the business for personal gain yet your tax dollars pay for the upkeep of the park. Vote No. and look into where your tax dollars allocated for parks and rec are actually going.
