The male driver of a Suburu Forester was uninjured following a crash in which his vehicle veered off of East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood, hit a tree, then damaged several headstones in the Valleau Cemetery before coming to a rest.  The incident happened at approximately 11:25 AM on Thursday, 10/23.  The car was removed by a flatbed tow truck.  Ridgewood PD is investigating the cause of the crash.

  1. The gravestones just jumped out of nowhere.

  2. All that without a prior appointment …. and/or reserved location.

  3. Yes Dom and they didn’t even use the Valet service.

  4. There were two unusual accidents on Ridgewood Ave today. One by the Duck Pond and the other at the corner of Ridgewood and Somerville Road.

  5. #5 – so two on Ridgewood Ave near Duck Pond? That section of roadway has gotten so out of control; it’s only a matter of time before another serious accident happens. Many, many years ago, a motorcyclist was rear-ended on Ridgewood Ave near Walthery and wound up dead on someones front lawn, poor soul. ‘

Perhaps RPD could do some speed enforcement between Pleasant the the Duck Pond?

  6. I hope the driver is okay…it’s a short ride to HUMC in case he/she needs medical attention.

    Boycott Valley !

  7. #6 – speaking of speed enforcement, the old axiom about quotas and end of month ticket rushes by Johnny Law must still be true.

I saw a Wash Twp cop over by Charlie Brown’s yesterday with 5 cars pulled over for driving over the (25mph) limit. It’s almost impossible to drive 25mph on that road. This stretch of road is a cash cow for WT PD.

Also I espied a HHK cop sitting on a side street off of Sheridan Ave yesterday in HHK…he was sitting in an unmarked car.

    Be alert out there….

  8. Enforce speeding but then criticize the police for a ticket quota. Dam if you. Dam if you dont.

  9. I live near this cemetery and was curious to see the scene. Late last night when I had the chance I found the tire tracks off of Glen and onto the grass of the cemetery grounds. I saw where the Subaru hit and must have glanced off the tree, because it stripped off a fair amount of bark. The car traveled a fair distance from the road before coming to rest.

This was a very strange accident!

How on earth did it happen?

On the one hand, it could have been a catastrophic malfunction of the car itself, which if it happened must have been terrifying to the driver.

On the other hand, and having been there and looked at the aftermath, I think this must have been the result of a catastrophic malfunction of the driver’s brain. The point of departure from East Glen Avenue was pretty far from the nearest road intersection. The angle of departure at the point the car jumped the curb was steep, almost perpendicular to the line of the curb. And the car must have had a lot of speed and momentum.

The driver must have been travelling west, then for some reason, jerked the wheel hard to the right, straight toward the trees and gravestones. The driver must experienced an abrupt stroke or seizure.

The driver must experienced an abrupt stroke or seizure.

The driver may have swerved to avoid an animal, pedestrian, or another vehicle that entered his lane of travel.

  11. #10 – How about if the driver was texting or otherwise distracted?
