>Ridgewood, based bagel chain Wide World of Bagels opens shop in Mystic Ct.

By Ian Holliday

MYSTIC — New England – particularly Eastern New England – is notorious for having a doughnut shop on every street-corner, often literally. The stiff competition in this region was part of the reason Tim Hortons decided to shutter all of its Rhode Island and Connecticut stores last November.

But though the market for doughnuts in this area was cornered long ago, Elliot Cohen believes there’s an opportunity in Mystic for another doughy, circular food: the bagel.

This summer, Cohen and business partner Scott Handler will open a location of their Ridgewood, N.J.-based bagel chain Wide World of Bagels at the former site of Tim Hortons on East Main Street.

“We’re really excited about equipping it and opening it up,” Handler said.
Cohen, who spends three days each week in a condominium in downtown Mystic, said he began inquiring about the vacant building the day after Tim Hortons closed it. He contacted the town of Stonington to find out who owned the building and ended up working with the owner and Tim Hortons to transfer the lease from the departing chain to him.

>Use of "Dads Night " list called a disgrace

>Use of “Dads Night ” list called a disgrace

This is a disgrace. The email used was the yahoo group email for all dadsnight members which includes parents (both dads and moms) from Hawes and Somerville along with dads night alumni to include parents (dads and moms) at BFMS, RHS and those who have no kids left in the district. The individual who sent this email should apologize immediately and retract the inappropriate endorsement. Everyone should support the retraction regardless of who they support as this is such a violation of trust and a misuse of the group email.

This is a parent group using taxpayer facilities for fundraising events. If the Dads Night organization, which I have been a member for years, chooses to be a political arm they must be prohibited from using any public schools for fundraising events.

If this fella is actually and attorney he should be disbarred for stupidity.

>BOE Elections: After speaking to Krauss at length I plan on voting for her.

After speaking to Krauss at length I plan on voting for her. My other choice will have to be Sheila even though I think she has been there too long it seems there is no much of a choice when it boils down to the lesser of two evils.

Goodman has no regard for neighbors! She inflicted that duck pond dog park on everyone without consideration to anyone. The eyesore, noise , stench and crap everywhere is a disgrace. People from all over bringing their dogs. Now the plan is to move that eyesore closer to the road out of concern for the neighbors. Great! Now Ridgewood will greet visitors with a chain link fiasco perpetrated by Goodman. Can it be moved to her backyard?

Then the issue of the lights which Goodman voted on as BOE Liaison to Fields and now, as candidate in the hot seat she back peddles to mitigate her responsibility in the illuminating fiasco.

from the patch; ‘Laurie Goodman, who had voted in favor of the proposed (light) revision as liaison, said it was difficult as “much has to be left to the imagination.”

what part was left to the imagination? can the taxpayers of ridgewood take this candidate seriously? short answer is no.

>BOE Elections : Are we now requiring a litmus test for our BOE elected officials

I too am a concerned citizen of this town and I am concerned that the CCR would endorse a candidate for the BOE. Are we now requiring a litmus test for our BOE elected officials? This is an endorsement that does not speak to the needs of our children but just to someone’s anti-Valley stand.

How very sad…As far as I am aware, neither Sheila nor Laurie has taken a pro or anti Valley stand and this is how it should be when you are running for the BOE. The CCR may be correct on their Valley position but they are turning this town into a one issue community. Stridency is never good particularly when it comes to an issue as important and complex as the BOE and the education of our children. In fact 9:17 PM, Sheila has taken a strong stand on the safety of our children and construction requirements IF it comes to that. The CCR has really done a disservice to this community.

>The Apologist and Chief

>The Apologist and Chief
Doug Weaver

What is wrong with our president? I am getting so sick of him being an American apologist or expounding the virtues of some other countries virtues. It happened again when he addressed the Egyptian uprising by saying “Egyptians have inspired us, and they’ve done so by putting the lie to the idea that justice is best gained by violence”. Not trying to sound arrogant but Americans inspire others we do not get inspired by others. Is it lost on the president that an employee of an American company, Google , who has enjoyed the freedoms and rewards of this great nation, inspired the masses through the use of the Internet? I heard more than one Egyptian immigrant in the USA and protestors in Tahrir Square say the Egyptian people want the same freedoms as those we cherish in this country. Is it lost on this president that one only needs to go back to our recent history to see where Americans brought about great change with non violent actions. Reverend King’s march on Washington helped the Civil Rights laws become a reality. Ronald Reagan uttering the six simple words “Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall” inspired the Eastern European countries to demand their freedom. And most recently the Tea Party creating one of the greatest shifts in power in the history of this country.

And it is naive for the President to infer that only non-violence is the proper way to bring about justice. Would King George have granted the colonies freedom had the colonist march peacefully to Bunker Hill. Oof course not. Would the King Louis have granted freedom the French had they peacefully assembled at the Bastille. Of course not. and it was the success of our revolution that inspired the French. If this President needs to be inspired, I suggest he look at our own history and stop apologizing to the world for such things as a state that wants to enforce the federal immigration laws (Arizona)and praising people, who decided 230 years after colonists, to declare their God given right to freedom

>Ridgewood Native Anne Donovan will be the Interm Coach of the New York Liberty

>medium donovan

NEW YORK — Anne Donovan has moved to the head of the Liberty bench after Friday’s shakeup of the WNBA team’s coaching staff.

https://www.northjersey.com/sports/pro_sports/basketball/liberty/52234722.html

In announcing the firing of head coach Pat Coyle, Liberty president and general manager Carol Blazejowski said Donovan, a Ridgewood native , will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season, beginning with tonight’s game in Atlanta.

The moves came fewer than 24 hours after the Liberty’s home loss to Washington, its third in a row. The Liberty are 6-11 and in last place in the Eastern Conference after reaching the conference final last season.

“We thank Patty for her contributions to the New York Liberty over the past 11 seasons; I have great personal and professional respect for her,” Blazejowski said in a statement. “However, at this time, I decided that a change was in the best interests of the team.”

Coyle had an 81-90 record, including two conference finals appearances, since taking over as interim coach midway through the 2004 season. She joined the Liberty as an assistant coach in 1998.

Donovan, who began her playing career at Paramus Catholic, was a Naismith Award winner and three-time All-American at Old Dominion and won gold medals with the 1984 and 1988 Olympic teams. She was the head coach when the U.S. won gold in 2008.

>Reader says,"Stop the Race Baiting and just open the Hospital"

>A recent Headline from North Jersey Media ” Keep hospital shut, blacks tell Corzine” on Friday, July 10, 2009 BY Mary Jo Layton a staff writer set off alarm bells to this reader(https://www.northjersey.com/news/health/50426962.html ) It was filled with the usual tripe about how someone opening a hospital somewhere else is some how impacting the “down trodden” It was filled with the usually quotes from NAACP types and some comments from Assemblyman Gordon Johnson from Englewood not surprisingly home of none other than Englewood Hospital . But beside from omiiting the fact that Assemblyman Gordon Johnson represnts Englewood Hospital in his district ,I found the head line to be a very particular and insidious choice of words.,” Keep hospital shut, blacks tell Corzine” hummm no blacks live and work in Westwood or Hackensack?

The Implication being this person some how speaks for all blacks and it would be in their interest to ration health care for the rest of us? Folks maybe this is the problem to begin with . If a private investor wants to take a risk and open a hospital whats the problem ? I dont blame vested interests like Valley or Englewood Hospital for defending their turf but should it be up to Trenton to decide weather someone is allowed to open a hospital or not and where? I get it ,yes there are public health regulations and rightfully so but who the hell is Jon Corzine or some health care union to decide weather I can access health care or not ? Isnt the very problem leveled against the US health Care system that some dont have access? Yes some communities probably need a hospital more because of higher demand than north eastern part of Bergen county, but what does one have to do with the other ?
