>All in all, not a bad hurricane. Far less debris than I would have guessed

>Hurricane Irene : Readers put in their 2 cents

All in all, not a bad hurricane. Far less debris than I would have guessed.

Ridgewood NJ – My wife and I took a ride around town and all of the trouble spots were,
well, in trouble. Grove street by the path, duck pond, RHS field, Vets.
Maple was closed north of Linwood. Many cops evacuating people south of
Eastside – Albert & Maxwell were under couple of feet of water and a car
floated onto someone’s lawn. Down tree at the corner of Eastside and Alanon.
North Irving closed.

Funny but not expected was the 3 or 4 feet of water over RHS field except
for a 10′ bubble island in the center. I’d be curious what the cleanup bill
will be this time. Water had hit the bottom of the bridge’s roadway when I
drove through at 9am.

S&S and Kings were closed but Wide World of Bagels were open (yay!).

All in all, not a bad hurricane. Far less debris than I would have guessed.
I started thinking 24-30 hours ago that this was a trumped-up storm
tailor-made for the slow summer news cycle. Floyd made Irene look more like
a sunshower. We took necessary precautions and have zero problems on our
property & street. Even though we are a block from the Saddle River, we’d
need another 10′ of water before it touched our lawn. Floyd got within 1/2
block when the water crested.

Wherever you are, I hope you’re dry!

Take care,
Mike

>26% Say U.S. Public Schools Provide World-Class Education

>26% Say U.S. Public Schools Provide World-Class Education
Friday, August 26, 2011

While most adults agree with President Obama that a world-class education is the most important factor in the success of America’s children and status in the world, most don’t think U.S. public schools provide that level of education.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of American Adults shows that 61% agree with President Obama when he says “a world-class education is the single most important factor in determining not just whether our kids can compete for the best jobs but whether America can out-compete countries around the world.” Twenty-five percent (25%) disagree with that statement, while another 14% are undecided.

Agencies to promote ‘Jersey Fresh’ items

New Jersey state agencies will soon be featuring and promoting “Jersey Fresh” products in their eateries.
Gov. Chris Christie recently signed bipartisan legislation that requires the agencies — whenever possible — to provide enhanced visibility and accessibility to “Jersey Fresh” and “Jersey Grown” products they serve.
Proponents say it will benefit farmers and help boost sales of food products made with Garden State produce.
“There is a great interest in buying local and supporting our farmers,” said Douglas H. Fisher, New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture. “State agency food concession patrons do not have to go far to get high quality, healthy Jersey Fresh produce and other state agricultural products.”  (Shipkowski, The Associated Press)

73 percent of Americans believe U.S. on wrong track
By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON | Wed Aug 10, 2011 4:21pm EDT

(Reuters) – Economic fears are weighing heavily on Americans, with a large majority saying the United States is on the wrong track and nearly half believing the worst is yet to come, a Reuters/Ipsos poll said on Wednesday.

The poll reflected growing anxiety about the U.S. economy and frustration with Washington after a narrowly averted government default last week, a credit rating downgrade by Standard & Poor’s, a stock market dive and a stubbornly high 9.1 percent jobless rate.

President Barack Obama was politically bruised in the brutal, weeks-long debt debate, and negative views on the economy are worrisome signs for his 2012 re-election bid.

His approval rating dropped to 45 percent from 49 percent a month ago, according to the poll conducted from Thursday to Monday. Obama’s predecessor, President George W. Bush, never saw his approval rating dip below 46 percent in Gallup polling in his re-election year of 2004.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll found 73 percent of Americans believe the United States is “off on the wrong track,” and just one in five, 21 percent, think the country is headed in the right direction.

>205 Lotte Road : Village’s record in dealing with these types of issues is not the best

>205 Lotte Road : Village’s record in dealing with these types of issues is not the best

While I agree that the Village’s record in dealing with these types of issues is not the best, the issue is not as straight forward as one might think. The fact is that they can issue all of the notices and summonses they want and it may not solve the problem. If the owner does not have the money they are not going to do anything. If the owner is bankrupted nothing is going to happen.

My sister lives in another town and there is a house not too far from her in the same condition. The town issued summonses and the owner abandon the house and moved out of state. They can’t sue the owner because she has no assets and they no authority to force her to return to NJ to answer to building code violations.

The bank now owns the house and they will not do anything but list the property for sale. The bank is also located out of state and will not even respond to the town.

I hate to say it but we are going to be seeing more and more of these issues

>205 Lotte Road : why doesn’t the VOR enforce their laws?

WHY doesnt the VOR enforce their laws? That is the question here. It should not be up to a neighbor to hire an attorney and chase this builder. Should not be up to you bloggers to post the man’s home address and shame him into completing this project. It should be up to the Village.

The neighbors pay their taxes. They keep up their homes. One call to the Village Manager’s office, and we should see some movement. Ken, thats where you are failing. Your staff will not take action until there is a threat of a lawsuit. Thats the issue here. Should never come down to neighbor agst neighbor or neighbor agst builder. This is where the Village government steps in. Thats why we all pay taxes
