The History of Labor Day

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day
More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.
Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”
But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.
The First Labor Day
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.
In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.
Labor Day Legislation
Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
A Nationwide Holiday
The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television.
The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.

>Pimco’s El-Erian: US Economy Is ‘Grim and Scary’

Friday, 02 Sep 2011 01:00 PM

By David A. Patten

Following Friday’s report that zero jobs were generated in the month of August, Pimco investment firm CEO Mohamed El-Erian called the condition of the U.S. economy “grim and scary.”

Speaking to Bloomberg Television’s Betty Liu, El-Erian estimated the chance of another recession as at least one-in-three, and possibly as high as one-in-two.

“The downside risk is increasing,” El-Erian, whose company manages a portfolio of over $1 trillion, told Bloomberg. “Now, there is going to be even more attention on what President Obama will say on Thursday. It’s a critical speech.”

    >Swiss scientists finally discover the true cause of “global warming”. It’s the sun, stupid

    Sun Causes Climate Change Shock

If Michael Crichton had lived to write a follow-up to State of Fear, the plotline might well have gone like this: at a top secret, state of the art laboratory in Switzerland, scientists finally discover the true cause of “global warming”. It’s the sun, stupid. More specifically – as the Danish physicist Henrik Svensmark has long postulated – it’s the result of cosmic rays which act as a seed for cloud formation. The scientists working on the project are naturally euphoric: this is a major breakthrough which will not only overturn decades of misguided conjecture on so-called Man Made Global Warming but will spare the global economy trillions of dollars which might otherwise have been squandered on utterly pointless efforts to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions. However, these scientists have failed to realise just how many people – alarmist scientists, huckster politicians,  rent-seeking landowners like (the late Michael Crichton’s brilliant and, of course, entirely fictional creation) the absurd, pompous Sir Reginald Leeds Bt, green activists, eco-fund managers, EU technocrats, MSM environmental correspondents – stand to gain from the Man Made “Climate Change” industry. Their discovery must be suppressed at all costs. So, one by one, the scientists on the cosmic ray project find themselves being bumped off, until only one man remains and must race against time to prove, etc, etc…

    >Don’t count on getting 15 minutes of parking for your dime

    >Don’t count on getting 15 minutes of parking for your dime

Some time ago, during one of the many changes in Ridgewood parking rules, the two parking meters next to the post office (near E. Ridgewood Ave. and facing north on N. Walnut St.) were changed to have a 15-minute limitation. The idea was to give people just enough time to run into the post office and run out, freeing those handy meters for others.

But don’t count on getting a full 15 minutes for your dime.

About a month ago I put a dime in the meter closest to the corner–meter #216. (Yes, they have I.D. numbers.) To my surprise, the number of minutes that popped up on the screen was not 15, but 12. I later called the police department to report this; they kindly asked if I had gotten a ticket. No. But I had made it back with a minute or two to spare, when it should have shown 5 more minutes.

It’s hard enough to be sure you’ll get out of the P.O. line in 15 minutes; shaving 20% off the total makes the deadline even tighter. What’s really wrong is that the patron who receives a ticket and didn’t notice the number of minutes allowed may not realize that the meter zipped to zero in record time, and just pay up. What will happen as we get closer to those long P.O. lines for holiday mailings?

Today I parked at the second meter from the corner, #217. It had 3 minutes left on it. I know these meters are not additive and didn’t expect to get 18 minutes, as I would have on other meters. But the number that popped up was 14. Is this random?

When I returned from the post office 11 minutes later (whew!), the meter I’d previously reported (#216), which had a car next to it, was flashing. Has #216 been adjusted since I reported that it was giving only 12 minutes? Does anybody check the accuracy of the short-time meters, which exist elsewhere in town as well, to make sure they aren’t shaving minutes off the little time allowed? If the meters can’t be adjusted to that degree of accuracy, maybe they should allow 20 minutes for 15 cents.

How many tickets at 15-minute meters have been received, and paid, unfairly?

    >Perfect Storm of Hype: Politicians, the media and the Hurricane Irene apocalypse that never was

By Toby Harnden World Last updated: August 28th, 2011

For the television reporter, clad in his red cagoule emblazoned with the CNN logo, it was a dramatic on-air moment, broadcasting live from Long Island, New York during a hurricane that also threatened Manhattan.

“We are in, right, now…the right eye wall, no doubt about that…there you see the surf,” he said breathlessly. “That tells a story right there.”

Stumbling and apparently buffeted by ferocious gusts, he took shelter next to a building. “This is our protection from the wind,” he explained. “It’s been truly remarkable to watch the power of the ocean here.”

The surf may have told a story but so too did the sight behind the reporter of people chatting and ambling along the sea front and just goofing around. There was a man in a t-shirt, a woman waving her arms and then walking backwards. Then someone on a bicycle glided past.

Information on Keeping your pets safe in the storm

All regional shelters in Bergen County will be pet friendly and will ONLY accept dogs and cats. No animal will be allowed into the pet shelter unless the pet is in a carrier. Please make sure you have all the necessary items you need to take care of your pet including food, water, leashes, etc. Under NO circumstances will pets be allowed into the human shelter.

The most important thing a person can do is to plan ahead. If you are asked to evacuate, you need to bring your pets with you. You need to start thinking today about where you will take your pets — ask a dependable friend or relative who lives some distance from the evacuation area if you and/or your pets can stay with them until the all clear is given. An alternative is to find a pet friendly motel. There a number of them listed on the web:

You should have a portable pet carrier for each animal and identification with each animal. Bring copies of the pet’s licenses, leashes, water and food bowls, pet foods, bottled water, special medications and instructions for their administration, any special needs for your pet, blankets, handy wipes, paper towels and litter or bedding.

Go to https://www.nj.gov/agriculture/divisions/ah/prog/helpfullinks.html for other helpful links.

Listen for public safety announcements and if you are called to evacuate — DO NOT leave your pets behind!

    >Former Ridgewood Mortgage Broker and Employee Plead Guilty to Mortgage Fraud
ARTICLE POSTED BY MOE BEDARD ON AUGUST 24, 2011

NEWARK, N.J. – Ronald J. O’Malley, the former Chairman and Commissioner of the Bergen County Improvement Authority (“BCIA”) and a principal in the Ridgewood mortgage brokerage firm Diversified Financial Group, d/b/a Residential Mortgage Corporation (“Residential Mortgage”), and Laura-Jean Arvelo, a former Residential Mortgage employee, both pled guilty today in connection with a mortgage fraud scheme at Residential Mortgage that falsely claimed BCIA employment for numerous mortgage borrowers, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

O’Malley, 48, of Upper Saddle River, N.J., and Arvelo, 52, of River Vale, N.J., both entered guilty pleas this morning before U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh. Each pled guilty to Count One of the pending criminal Indictment, admitting that they conspired with each other; Residential Mortgage co-owner Edward Olimpio; two other Residential Mortgage employees, Daniel Gilmore and Rachell Fischbein; and others to commit wire fraud in connection with fraudulent mortgage and home equity loans brokered by Residential Mortgage between 2006 and 2009. Their sentencing hearings are scheduled for December 12, 2011.

    >I strongly beleive that the discussion of the Manager’s raise is something that needs to continue.

    >I strongly beleive that the discussion of the Manager’s raise is something that needs to continue

Many seem to believe that because the majority voted in favor of a resolution, that any legislator who disagrees, should be silent. “That’s the system at work”. I have to disagree with you. Arohnson speaking out on the issue was the correct thing to do. There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered before this issue is put to bed. First, the Manager’s increase was up on the agenda on Tuesday as a Consent item. which was intended to eliminate any public discussion. Therefore, the public had no idea what was coming. The few regular attendee who were there, voiced their displeasure.

The VC Council meeting are open to the public and even the minutes of their closed session should be available. Second, obviously there had been previous discussions among the Councilmembers, which the public was not previed to. I’m curious as to the origin of the increase: Did the Village Manger come to the VC and say “I want a raise” or, though its highly unlikely, did one or more members of the VC go to the Village Manager and say “You’re doing a great job, you deserve a raise”? In either case, who negotiated the amount of the increase and why was it retroactive? What is the justification, if any, for paying the Village Manager more than the Governor? Really, a 12% increase! Third, was the Manager’s raise ever part of the “incentive” bonus pool for the non-union employees? If so, was it taken out of the pool, by the VC, to avoid any public discussion? Fourth, was the $20,000 raise meant to relace the amount that the Village Manager gave up, when the Village hired a new CFO?

Finally, the public is entitled to much more specific explantions from the individual Council Members as to why they voted as they did. I’m not satisfied with the broad statements that the Village Manager saved hundreds of thousands of dollars or that he’s doing a great job. Unfortunately, I don’t think either statement is true.

As a further reply. I think the tone from Deputy Mayor Riche is clearly intended to be intimidating. Many of us have viewed this behavior on his part and our deeply troubled by it.

I strongly beleive that the discussion of the Manager’s raise is something that needs to continue. That several VC members, say that the public should accept what they did until the next election, raises serious doubts that what they did can ever be justified. Elected officals are accountable for their actions throughout their terms. If a Councilperson does not want to justify his or her actions, he or she should be recalled and relaced by someone who does. THAT’S THE WAY THE SYSTEM SHOULD WORK!

    >President Obama : "After 40 fund-raisers, I think I’ve earned a vacation."

    >President Obama : “After 40 fund-raisers, I think I’ve earned a vacation.”
    Ron

Last week, there was controversy over Obama taking a vacation. Ordinarily, considering the grueling hours a President works to serve the people, I wouldn’t give a second thought to it. But this is what Obama said, quote:  “After 40 fund-raisers, I think I’ve earned a vacation.”  So, abandoning his duties in Washington, he travelled around raising money for himself, to finance his re-election campaign, more than a year in advance of the election, and tired himself out so badly, eating all those dinners at other people’s expense, and shaking down, I mean shaking hands, with all those supporters, that he needed to compound his dereliction of duty, by continuing his hiatus from work with a vacation.

I can hear his words now, if – God forbid – he wins re-election. I’m so tired, from 40 fund-raisers  to build my Presidential Library, that I’ve earned a vacation to recover. This man is the poster child for arrogance. If you don’t believe it, consider how stupid he thinks the American people are. He goes on an extended bus tour (on a Canadian-made bus) to the primary states to stump for Democratic candidates at taxpayers expense. This is illegal for a sitting President to do, so he calls it a tour to be in touch with the people – not a campaign tour. Well, I can call a mule a jack-ass, but it’s not the same thing. No other President has ever gotten the free passes Obama gets. It’s time to end his free ride in 2012.

(CNSNews.com) – Taxing millionaires and billionaires more – a position advocated by billionaire Warren Buffett and President Barack Obama – won’t make much of a dent in the national debt or the record federal budget deficits, a new study finds.

“Even taking every last penny from every individual making more than $10 million per year would only reduce the nation’s deficit by 12 percent and the debt by 2 percent,” the non-partisan Tax Foundation’s David Logan writes.

    >We need to increase Graydon badge sales to residents, I dont want Graydon to becone just a "tourist destination"

    >

    Graydondriveby theridgewoodblog.net

We need to increase Graydon badge sales to residents, I dont want Graydon to becone just a  “tourist destination”

Badge sales to non-residents are a small fraction of the total badge sales. There were only 263 badge sales to non-residents and 2,896 to residents. That is less than 10%.

I have been for keeping Graydon “natural”, but if we are turning this into a tourist destination then I will have to change my position. This needs to be for the residents of Ridgewood. That said, I’ll fight putting in a gaudy water park or a series of unimaginative concrete pools.

There needs to be a third option where we can modernize and modify Graydon so it again becomes a community meeting place where Ridgewood residents want to go.If this cannot be achieved, then I’d be for filling it in and doing something else with the land (for Ridgewood residents) before turning it into the most popular day camp site for all of the local urban centers.

I agree that the changes that have been made over the past few years (for example: water quality is excellent; snack bar is much improved) have made it a very nice place to relax, but if the residents are not coming, then more changes need to be made or perhaps, sadly, it is time to move on.
