Cellphone antenna proposal draws objections in Ridgewood

RIDGEWOOD — The proposed installation of a 3-foot-tall cellphone antenna atop the cross that looms high above West Side Presbyterian Church has drawn a number of objections from neighbors.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment is expected to resume testimony on the use and height variance application from Verizon when the board meets Jan. 11.
More than 10 residents with homes near the South Monroe Street church argued in November the antenna would diminish the neighborhood’s character. Representatives for Verizon said the antenna would address existing service gaps in Ridgewood.
Installed, the antenna would bring the church’s total building height to 68.5 feet. At present, law restricts building heights in Ridgewood to 30 feet or less.

The neighbors are being silly. This will not increase traffic in their neighborhood. It will not affect the quality of life.
I simply don’t understand the logic behind the objections. It’s an antenna that will barely noticeable but will vastly improve cell phone reception in the area.
If they don’t like it on the steeple, maybe it can be put at Ridge school.
The NIMBYs are at it again.
I’d welcome better cell phone service, but putting a cell phone tower on a church… It aint fittin’, it just aint fittin’

I believe it’s the principals of that particular church who decide whether they are okay with the antenna. They obviously are. It’s not up to a few neighbors here who are venting fake outrage. I suspect that you probably don’t even go to church.
It never ceases to amaze me about how these self centered new residents expect to be able to chat on the phone and text (usually while driving) but when its time to create the infrastructure necessary to support their ‘activities’ they become vocal ‘nimbys’.
