Paramus NJ, What started as a smaller safety concern has officially ballooned into a nationwide food safety alert.Trader Joe’s, along with other major retailers, is grappling with a massive expansion of a frozen food recall involving nearly 37 million pounds of Asian-themed products.
The culprit? Potential glass contamination that federal investigators have traced back to a surprising source: the carrots.
The Recall Details: What You Need to Know
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the expansion of the recall on March 3, 2026. The original recall, which began in mid-February, focused primarily on Chicken Fried Rice but has now grown to include 16 different products across multiple brands, including Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Tai Pei, and Ling Ling.
The products were manufactured by Oregon-based Ajinomoto Foods North America, Inc. between October 21, 2024, and February 26, 2026.
Specific Trader Joe’s Products Affected
If you have these popular frozen items in your freezer, check the “Best By” dates immediately. Trader Joe’s has confirmed the following items are included in the recall:
Note: These products may bear the establishment numbers P-18356 or P-18356B inside the USDA mark of inspection.
How Glass Got Into the Food
The investigation began after multiple consumers reported finding glass pieces in their meals. Federal regulators discovered that the carrots used in the recipes were the likely source of the contamination. While no injuries have been confirmed to date, the USDA has classified this as a Class I Recall, meaning there is a high risk of serious health consequences if consumed.
What Should You Do?
-
Do Not Eat the Food: Even if you don’t see glass, fragments can be microscopic and dangerous to the throat and digestive tract.
-
Discard or Return: You can throw the product away or return it to any Trader Joe’s location for a full refund.
-
Contact Healthcare Providers: If you suspect you have consumed contaminated food or feel unwell, contact a doctor immediately.

Obviously unsafe food has to be destroyed, but what a tragedy to dump millions of pounds of food when people are hungry. If the problem were any number of things other than glass, maybe some of it could have been given to animals or something.
