Christie: If NJ doesn’t act, it could become Detroit
A caller prodded Gov. Chris Christie on the subject of cancer research funding, another on education funding, and in each case the governor pointed at the legislature.
He wouldn’t tell Ask the Governor host Eric Scott how he will handle Speaker Vinny Prieto’s (D-32) refusal to date to re-up the 2 percent cap on police and fire salary awards, preferring to keep his strategy cloaked.
“You wouldn’t want me to look like a schmuck, would you?” Christie asked Scott.
But the governor was pleased to blame Prieto.
A woman wanted to know why he can’t put more money into education.
“When I have to spend 94 cents on every dollar on pensions, health care and debt services, we can’t sustain it,” Christie said. “Any doubt of that, look at the City of Detroit. …The legislature may decide they simply won’t do anything about it. [But] The chickens are going to come home to roost.”
Christie has agreed to negotiate with Prieto on a law that limits property tax increases by limiting raises to some police and firefighters. (Pizarro/PolitickerNJ)

Fortunately I bought my NJ home 15 years ago, so I can sell to some sucker at a profit and get out of dodge before the unions completely destroy this state.
If we didn’t have Christie, we would have been sunk already by the escapades of Corzine, McGreevey, and Florio.
“You wouldn’t want me to look like a schmuck, would you?” Did he really say that???? This is why the man will not survive a Presidential campaign.
#1 Let us not forget who the first governor was who screwed around with pension money, she just happened to be a republican so place the blame where it belongs and stop with the bullshit.
well the fire and police pay scales are out of control.
Maybe he could use some of that SANDY money that no is getting instead of using it to make his self serving TV commercials about the Jersey Shore.
Here we go blame police and fire depts again. I guess if your in a jam you will call ghost busters. Wrong when you need help the first depts you call and the first to help you out are your police and fire depts
Lets get rid of the Police & fire and give ever resident a gun and hose to fend for themselves.
Lets get ride of those Senior Citizens they are a drain on the government. Social security Medicare. Then they want the town to provide for the social activities. They are not contributing. Their retired.
Lets not forget, the police are reactive to a situation. They are not there to protect the citizens. By the time you call 911 the perp is gone and the damage is done. Having said that, I’m not calling for any lowering of the PD/FD/street dept budget in town. Its within reason.
The excess is in the Board of Ed. Class sizes should be increased, and home schooling encouraged. If this rich people have a stupid kid, let them pay for a tutor instead of saddling the rest of us with ‘special needs’ costs.
The seniors are the only bargain in town.
They pay for the schools , thereby subsidizing the rest of your rugrats.
They get NOTHING from the Village.. and don’t want it either.
They want a nice QUIET place to live, without the loud, brash, abrasive, inconsiderate newbies of the ‘me me’ generation.
Remember, every senior or household without children that moves out of town will be filling the bedrooms with the children of new arrivals.
Our governor should remember that all these retired employees that receive these pension, the majority live in N.J. and still vote.
# 9 While I see your point I do not agree with it all. Yes the police and fire are reactive but they are also proactive. Patrolling neighborhoods, DWI and I could go on. If they were only reactive then they could stay home and just get a phone call to take a report. Don’t forget Police&Fire is like you house or car insurance. You may never use it but if something happens you wish you had it.
Hey Dom how long have been collecting you pension from the county?
In ‘theory’ they are out patrolling. As an example, I can show you multiple cars that are parked overnite on the street that NEVER get tickets, so the police presence isn’t there or they aren’t doing their job.
The police are reactive. The police carry guns to protect themselves. If a homeowner has an intruder, that perp is usually gone by the time police arrive, just like a bank robbery. Their job is taking reports and hopefully finding the perp so the courts can punish them. But they in no way ‘protect’ us from the perp of that crime. MAybe a FUTURE crime if the perp is a repeat criminal. But not really an ‘insurance policy’ that you hope you don’t need…wheras the Fire dept. is different. They get called and their reaction fixes the problem (=puts out the fire).
#8. The schools are the biggest drain for me. Let parents pay as they go.
We are beginning. To sound like that crazy rancher in Nevada. People only like the parts of government that work for them. The crazy man who does not recognize the federal government waves the flag of the United States. He should wave a big I.O.U.
incase you havnt noticed Bergen county is turning into a dump , Detroit we are well on our way
Unfortunately you are correct.
As long as we continue to allow the mooches on welfare to vote for those who continue to give them sec 8 housing, EBT cards, lifetime welfare benefits, it wont change.
If only those who paid taxes were allowed to vote, then the country could be turned around.
#18 don’t forget we give them cell phone with min.
