MOONACHIE, NJ – A routine Thursday morning took a dramatic turn on September 26th when a box truck crashed and flipped into a residential driveway on Moonachie Road. While the crash left a scene of significant damage, authorities report the most fortunate outcome: no injuries were sustained by the driver or bystanders.
The accident occurred around 6:00 AM on Moonachie Road, just north of Joseph Street and directly across from the Moonachie Fire Department.
Driver Self-Extricated After Steering Malfunction
According to Lt. Jeff Napolitano of the Moonachie Police Department, the incident was caused by a mechanical failure. The truck, which was heavily loaded with boxed grocery items, lost control after its steering shaft malfunctioned. The truck flipped onto its side, sliding into a residential driveway and colliding with three parked vehicles.
The Moonachie First Aid & Rescue Squad quickly responded to the scene for the “overturned Box Truck.” Upon the Squad’s arrival, the driver had already self-extricated from the wreckage. After being evaluated by first responders, the driver was released after signing a Refusal of Medical Assistance (RMA) on the scene.
“Luckily No One Was In That Area”
The timing of the accident could have been far worse. Moonachie Police Lt. Napolitano highlighted the immediate concern for pedestrian safety in the area during the early morning hours.
“That area is busy with pedestrian traffic that time in the morning, so luckily no one was in that area at that time,” Napolitano stated.
The outcome underscores the swift action of emergency services and the sheer luck that prevented a serious pedestrian incident in the busy residential neighborhood. The overturned truck has since been successfully removed from the street, and the investigation into the mechanical failure is ongoing.
