Ridgewood NJ, the morning of Wednesday, October 29th, 2025, nearly turned disastrous in Village of Ridgewood, when a seemingly harmless piece of trash ignited into a serious fire hazard. However, due to the sharp eyes of Village of Ridgewood Sanitation Division employees and the quick action of a Ridgewood Patrol Officer, a major incident was averted, and thousands of dollars in municipal equipment were saved.

The near-miss highlights a growing and dangerous problem: the improper disposal of electronics, particularly those containing volatile lithium-ion batteries.
The Smoking Gun in the Garbage Hopper
The incident began when Sanitation Division employees noticed a plume of smoke rising from their garbage truck’s hopper. They quickly realized a fire had started inside the load. The culprit? A discarded laptop containing a lithium battery that had compromised the safety of the entire truck.
Recognizing the escalating danger, the workers immediately flagged down a nearby Ridgewood Patrol Officer to radio for the Ridgewood Fire Department .

The Life-Saving Decision
The situation demanded immediate, strategic action. Dumping the flaming load in a residential area, especially near a private school, was too risky. It could have caused a significant brush fire or damaged nearby property.
The quick-thinking truck driver proposed an ingenious alternative: the Patrol Officer would provide an emergency escort to a vacant, municipally owned parking lot. This allowed the operation to be moved to a controlled, safe environment.
Firefighters to the Rescue
The Ridgewood FD firefighters were directed by radio to meet the truck at the designated parking lot. Upon arrival, crews quickly spotted and removed the smoking laptop and battery from the hopper. The device was then safely “neutralized,” preventing the laptop’s lithium battery from transitioning into a full, unstoppable thermal runaway fire.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
A Crucial Reminder on Electronics Disposal
This event serves as a critical safety reminder for the entire community. Lithium-ion batteries (found in phones, laptops, tablets, and power tools) can easily spark and ignite when crushed, compacted, or damaged in a garbage truck’s hopper or a landfill.
Please remember:
- NEVER place electronics or lithium batteries in your regular household garbage or recycling bins.
- Check the Village of Ridgewood’s official guidelines for approved e-waste drop-off locations and hazardous waste disposal events.
The Ridgewood Fire Department and Police Department commend the sanitation crew for their vigilance and quick-thinking under pressure. Their actions saved valuable municipal property and protected the safety of the community.
