Paramus NJ, if your morning commute or Thanksgiving travel plans involve Route 17 North in Bergen County, be warned: Route 17 North in Paramus is completely closed near the Garden State Parkway following a serious early-morning crash.

The closure, which began around 2:40 AM, is expected to be extended, causing heavy traffic delays throughout the area.

Crash Details: Jackknifed Truck and Fuel Leak

The major motor vehicle crash (MVC) occurred on the northbound side of Route 17 near the Garden State Parkway interchange.

  • Incident: A jackknifed tractor trailer crashed, resulting in the truck leaking fuel onto the highway.

  • Response: The Paramus Fire Department responded to manage the fuel leak, and numerous emergency vehicles remain at the scene.

  • Current Status (as of 7:30 AM): Route 17 North remains fully closed at Century Road and will stay closed “until further notice,” according to Paramus Mayor Chris DiPiazza.

While two southbound lanes were temporarily closed earlier, they have since reopened. However, the northbound closure is causing significant backups, with heavy delays extending all the way back to Route 4.

Travel Warning: Major Thanksgiving Delays Expecte

The timing of this incident is particularly challenging as New Jersey heads into the peak Thanksgiving travel week. AAA projected that approximately 1.8 million people in New Jersey will be traveling by car this week.

This morning’s closure directly impacts the recommended travel time for Wednesday, November 26th.

Commuter Advice:

  • Avoid Route 17 North: Traffic is heavily affected, creating major congestion.

  • Check GPS/Waze: Use navigation apps for real-time routing. As one commuter noted, Waze can help guide you onto alternate routes like the Garden State Parkway and back onto Route 17 at a later exit.

  • Allow Extra Time: Expect significant delays if you must travel in the area.
