Wyckoff Alert: Police Issue Fines for Unshoveled Sidewalks as New Storm Approaches
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Wyckoff NJ, With Bergen County currently under a Winter Storm Watch, Wyckoff residents are being reminded that clearing their sidewalks isn’t just a neighborly gesture—it’s the law.
Following the major snowfall on January 25, which dumped over 9 inches on the region, Wyckoff police recently issued 13 summonses to property owners and tenants who failed to clear snow and ice. As another system prepares to hit the area, local officials are making it clear: enforcement is in full effect.
The $500 Penalty: Understanding Township Ordinance 165-1
The Wyckoff Police Department is citing Township Ordinance 165-1, which governs the removal of snow and ice by owners or tenants. If you own or rent property in the township, here is what you need to know to avoid a trip to Municipal Court:
-
The 12-Hour Rule: Snow and ice must be removed from abutting sidewalks within 12 hours of daylight after the storm has ended.
-
The Penalty: Violators are required to appear in Municipal Court and could face fines of up to $500.
-
Police Discretion: The Police Chief does consider the severity and amount of snowfall when determining if a “reasonable opportunity” to clear the path was provided.
Why the Crackdown Matters
While the largest storm of the year (so far) occurred on Jan. 25, the summonses were issued on Jan. 31. This week-long gap shows that the township is prioritizing public safety for pedestrians, mail carriers, and students who rely on clear paths to navigate the town.
Local Tip: Ice can be just as dangerous as deep snow. The ordinance specifically includes “ice formed thereon,” meaning salt or sand should be used if freezing rain or melting/refreezing occurs.
How to Prepare for the Next Bergen County Storm
With a new winter storm just around the corner, now is the time to ensure you are ready to comply with local laws:
| Task | Pro-Tip |
| Check Equipment | Ensure your shovel isn’t cracked and your snowblower has fresh fuel. |
| Stock Up on Salt | Buy calcium chloride or rock salt before the rush hits local hardware stores. |
| Clear Early | If it’s a long-duration storm, clearing in “shifts” makes the final 12-hour deadline much easier to hit. |
| Help a Neighbor | If you have elderly neighbors, consider helping them clear their path to keep the whole block safe and ticket-free. |

Such bs
Clear ur sidewalk, town/plows put it right back on
If you cleared your sidewalk before the time limit, you did it after the snow stopped falling in compliance with the law.
So that plowed snow isn’t snow fall. It’s packed crap that they should remove. Take before and after photos. This happens all the time when they speed down the street.
Do proactive removal in front of your driveway apron and in the direction the plow will come to prevent packed berms. They do have to clean the street.
Long overdue…Midland Ave in Paramus has the worst offenders…
