SADDLE RIVER, NJ – Authorities in Saddle River have confirmed the capture and euthanasia of an aggressive coyote this week following two separate attacks on residents who were walking their dogs. The incidents, which occurred near key roadways, have prompted police to urge extreme caution among all residents.

The attacks took place in areas near Chestnut Ridge Road and Werimus Road (Thursday evening) and near Chestnut Ridge Road and North Church Road (Friday morning). Both victims were treated for their injuries.

The Investigation and Euthanasia

Following the reports, Saddle River Police immediately contacted the state’s Department of Environmental Protection Division of Fish and Wildlife and Tyco Animal Control to investigate the dangerous behavior.

Late Friday afternoon, police issued a message confirming the outcome of the investigation:

“During the investigation, two coyotes were located, one already deceased and one that was acting abnormally and was euthanized,” police stated.

Both animals have been sent for disease testing, though experts note that the fatal disease rabies is rarely found in coyotes. The testing will determine if the aggressive behavior was linked to illness.

Ongoing Threat and What Residents Must Do

While one aggressive coyote has been removed, the police are maintaining a vigilant presence. It remains unknown if any public threat continues in the area.

Saddle River Police have issued the following strong advisory for residents:

  • Report Sightings: Immediately report any sightings of sick or aggressive animals to the police department.
  • Use Caution: Continue to use caution while walking, especially in the Chestnut Ridge Road area.
  • Monitor Children & Pets: Pay special attention while outside with pets and children and do not leave them unattended.
  • Document Incidents: Any resident who has experienced a similar incident should call the Saddle River Police Department at 201-327-5300 to document the event.

Coyote Precautions: The State’s Advice

Officials in Saddle River have previously voiced concerns about aggressive coyotes in the area, including one that was killed during a deer cull last year. The state reminds residents that while attacks are extremely rare, caution is always necessary.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) advises residents on what to do if a coyote shows unusual behavior:

  • Daytime Sightings: If you see a coyote in the daytime that shows no fear of humans, contact the police immediately.
  • State Contact: For non-emergency reports, call the Division of Fish and Wildlife at 908-735-8793.
  • After Hours: For urgent issues outside of normal business hours, call the DEP Hotline at 877-WARN-DEP.

Remain alert, secure your pets and children, and report all unusual animal behavior to help keep the Saddle River community safe.
