Ridgewood NJ, a recent study has found that individuals who inhale marijuana smoke daily have a significantly higher risk—three to five times greater—of being diagnosed with head and neck cancers. However, the study did not find a similar association between occasional marijuana use and these types of cancers.

Researchers from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California conducted an extensive analysis of millions of medical records, focusing on cannabis-use disorder. This disorder describes individuals who use marijuana daily, develop a high tolerance, and continue using the drug even when it leads to health problems.

Doctors have noted that marijuana smoke contains many of the same harmful toxins, irritants, and carcinogens as cigarette smoke. “The presence of high levels of carcinogens creates protein abnormalities in the cell, what we call neo antigens, and the body wants to react to that because they look foreign,” explains Dr. Barry Boyd of Greenwich Hospital.

Boyd also highlights that various factors can contribute to head and neck cancer, including certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). He emphasizes that receiving the HPV vaccine and avoiding smoking are effective ways to prevent these types of cancer.

Earlier this year, another study found that daily smoking, vaping, or ingesting edible marijuana is linked to a 25% higher risk of heart attack and a 42% higher risk of stroke. This growing body of research underscores the potential health risks associated with frequent marijuana use, particularly for those who use it daily.
