Ridgewood NJ, the holiday season means festive music, but cranking up the yuletide tunes might be riskier than you think! According to recent analyses, certain high-tempo Christmas songs can be incredibly distracting for drivers, potentially leading to erratic and unsafe driving habits.

Before you set your holiday playlist for your next drive, check out which fast-paced tracks are frequently cited as the most dangerous on the road.

The Science of Distraction: BPM and Driving

Studies have consistently shown that songs with a high Beats Per Minute (BPM) count can encourage drivers to accelerate, drive faster, and be more prone to risky or aggressive maneuvering. For the holidays, these upbeat, popular tracks often top the lists of distracting driving music:

Distracting Song Artist Key Reason Cited
“It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” Andy Williams Frequently appears at the top of distraction lists due to high tempo.
“Last Christmas” Ariana Grande Cited for its very high BPM, making risky driving more likely.
“Frosty the Snowman” Various Artists Noted for its brisk, high tempo (sometimes clocked at 172 BPM), ranking it as highly distracting.

According to experts like Insuranceopedia, that classic cheer might be counterproductive to safe travel!

Other High-Tempo Holiday Hits to Watch Out For

Beyond the leading contenders, many other popular, fast-paced holiday songs can affect your concentration and speed. If these are on your playlist, practice cautious driving:

  • “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande

  • “Mele Kalikimaka” by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters

  • “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey

While holiday music adds joy to the season, safety experts recommend choosing calmer, mid-tempo songs for long drives or reducing the volume when navigating busy or challenging traffic conditions. Keep your focus on the road, not just the festive beat!

  1. “Feliz Navidad” (sp?) is extremely repetitive and beloved by supermarkets, which seem to use loops of about ten Christmas songs when there must be hundreds.

Even though I am only “driving” a supermarket cart, it makes me feel like crashing into something.
