With the holiday shopping season in full swing, residents in the Township of Washington and beyond are hitting “Order Now” at record rates. But as delivery trucks fill our streets, they are being followed by a Grinch-like threat: Porch Pirates

Twp of Washington NJ, According to the Township of Washington Police Department, package theft is a crime of opportunity that spikes during the holidays. With gift shortages driving people to shop earlier than ever, your front porch could be a goldmine for thieves if left unprotected.
Whether you’re in Washington Twp or anywhere else in NJ, here is how to harden your home against holiday theft.
How to Stop Porch Pirates: The Ultimate Prevention Guide
The best way to stop a thief is to remove the opportunity. Use these eight strategies to ensure your gifts make it under the tree, not into a stranger’s trunk.
1. Master Your Tracking Apps
Knowledge is power. Most major retailers (Amazon, Target, Walmart) and carriers (UPS, FedEx, USPS) offer real-time text or email alerts. Knowing the exact minute a package hits your porch allows you to bring it inside immediately.
2. The “Buddy System” Delivery
If you know you’ll be at work or running errands, have your packages delivered to a trusted neighbor, friend, or relative who stays home during the day. A package sitting on a porch for six hours is a magnet for trouble; a package sitting for six minutes is much safer.
3. Utilize “Ship to Store”
Many big-box retailers offer a “Ship to Store” or “In-Store Pickup” option. This is often the safest method, as your item remains in a secure, climate-controlled environment behind a counter until you provide ID to claim it.
4. Schedule for Your Presence
When possible, select a delivery window that aligns with your schedule. Some carriers now allow you to pay a small fee to choose a specific delivery day or time slot when you know you’ll be home.
5. Install a Video Doorbell
A video doorbell (like Ring or Nest) serves two purposes:
-
Deterrence: Thieves are less likely to strike if they see a glowing blue camera lens.
-
Evidence: If a theft does occur, you have high-definition footage of the suspect and their vehicle to provide to the Washington Twp Police.
6. Require a Signature
For high-value items like electronics or jewelry, always request Signature Confirmation. This ensures the carrier cannot leave the item unattended; if you aren’t there to sign, they will take it back to a secure facility for redelivery.
7. Post Office & Vacation Holds
If you are traveling for the holidays, don’t let packages pile up. Request a Vacation Hold from the USPS. Alternatively, you can have your packages held at a local post office or a FedEx/UPS access point (like a nearby pharmacy or locker) for secure pickup.
8. Use Amazon Lockers
If you are an Amazon shopper, look for Amazon Hub Lockers in the Township of Washington area. These self-service kiosks allow you to pick up your packages using a secure code at your convenience.
Stay Vigilant Year-Round
While the holidays are “peak season” for porch pirates, police warn against complacency once January arrives. Online shopping is now a year-round lifestyle, and thieves know it.
Police Advice: Keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles following delivery trucks or individuals walking onto properties without a clear purpose. If you see something, say something by contacting your local precinct.

Some of your people need to do what I do I take an Amazon box I put a plastic bag inside. I put my dog dodo inside the bag tied up. And I leave it by the mailbox and watch some stupid idiot. Pick it up and take it. They get down the block and they open it up. I have a nice Sunday surprise with a note. Happy holidays and now we have a picture of them on my surveillance.
You know it’s amazing how someone of you people say oh you should lock your doors on your car don’t leave your key fob in the car. So what should we do about the people coming up to my property right to the front door and taking my items that I purchased that I own. Now someone’s invading my property that is theft. How are we going to stop this. How can Amazon deliver packages from 5 AM up to 10:30 PM and leave thousand dollar items right on your porch in the rain and not covered up in plastic I don’t get it. And anyone can come and just take it off my porch now I’m out my money and my item. Now, what am I doing? Homeowners insurance doesn’t cover items stolen off your porch from a delivery service and even if they do get deductible it’s probably 1000 or 2000 and who knows what. I’m constantly getting my neighbors packages and I’m a nice guy. I bring them over to them.
To. The people who put thumbs down.
