Saddle Brook NJ, commuters on Route 80 westbound witnessed a harrowing scene early Monday afternoon when a Volkswagen SUV veered off the highway, careening down a steep, wooded embankment toward the Saddle River.

Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, which occurred on January 26, 2026, the incident ended with a miraculous outcome for the driver.
The Crash and Response
At approximately midday, the Volkswagen lost control near the Saddle Brook corridor. The vehicle plummeted off the roadway, coming to rest precariously along the banks of the river.
In a display of sheer luck and resilience, the driver managed to self-extricate from the wreckage. When Bergen County EMS arrived on the scene, the individual incredibly refused medical attention, reporting no major injuries despite the significant drop.
The emergency response was a multi-agency effort, including:
-
NJ State Police (Lead investigators)
-
Saddle Brook Fire Department
-
Bergen County EMS
-
NJDOT Emergency Response Team
A Complex Recovery Operation
Because of the steep terrain and the vehicle’s position near the water, a standard tow truck wasn’t enough. A heavy-duty tow truck equipped with a rotating recovery arm was deployed to the highway shoulder.
Traffic was briefly impacted as the specialized crane-like arm hoisted the battered VW back up the embankment and onto the pavement. The SUV was eventually hauled away by a flatbed tow truck.
Safety Reminder for Route 80 Drivers
While the cause of the accident is still under investigation by the New Jersey State Police, the steep embankments along the Saddle River stretch of I-80 are notoriously difficult for recovery operations. Officials remind drivers to remain vigilant, especially during winter months when road conditions can change rapidly.
