RIVER EDGE, NJ — A massive multi-agency search operation lit up the banks of the Hackensack River late last night after reports of a “party in the water” near the historic Steuben House.

The River Edge Volunteer Fire Department acted with lightning speed, deploying land, water, and air assets to investigate the potential life-threatening emergency at the New Bridge Landing site.
High-Tech Search: Drones Over the Hackensack
Minutes after the dispatch, River Edge’s elite specialized units—including Marine 1, Marine 2, Ladder 1, and Squad 4—arrived on the scene. Given the darkness and the river’s unpredictable currents, the department deployed cutting-edge technology to gain the upper hand.
-
Thermal Imaging Drones: Search teams launched two advanced drones equipped with thermal cameras to scan the river and dense shoreline for heat signatures.
-
Marine Units: Rescue boats hit the water to perform a grid search of the area surrounding the Von Steuben house.
The Outcome: A Relief for the Community
After a comprehensive sweep involving several neighboring departments, the search ended with the best possible news. The individual reported to be in the water was located safe and sound in a neighboring town.
The incident serves as a powerful demonstration of the regional cooperation between Bergen County emergency services. River Edge Fire officials extended their gratitude to the following agencies for their swift mutual aid:

Safety First: Why New Bridge Landing is High-Risk
The area near the Steuben House is not only a historical landmark but also a complex zone for first responders. The combination of tidal river currents and muddy banks makes night rescues particularly dangerous, which is why the immediate “all-hands” response was vital.
“Our members train year-round for water rescues and drone operations. Last night proved that when every second counts, technology and teamwork save lives.” — River Edge Fire Department
