East Rutherford NJ, due to the rise in thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles, specifically model years 2011-2021, police agencies have partnered with the Hyundai/KIA motor corporations to assist the East Rutherford  residents in preventing future thefts. These vehicles are being specifically targeted due to an override of the ignition.
Currently there is a software upgrade and in addition to the software upgrade, the Hyundai/KIA Motor Company is distributing FREE steering wheel locks to Borough residents. The locks, which were donated to this agency, are available to residents who own a Hyundai/KIA vehicle that was manufactured between 2011 and 2021, that DO NOT have a push-button start.

If interested, please email East Rutherford Police Captain Berlinski at TBerlinski@erpd.org and you must provide a copy of your vehicle’s registration to qualify.

Recently and within the last few years, we have seen a steep rise in vehicle theft, as car thieves figure out ways to get around modern security systems. It can be hard to track stolen cars, so chances are, if your vehicle’s taken, you might never see it again.
We understand that you have heard this reminder before, but it is IMPORTANT to always lock your cars whenever they are left unattended. Studies have shown that the vast majority of vehicles that are burglarized or stolen have been left unlocked. Please do not be the next victim. Here are some helpful steps that everyone should follow:
* ALWAYS lock your vehicle, even when it’s parked in your driveway or garage.
* ALWAYS take your keys or fob with you.
* NEVER leave or hide a smart key, valet key, or spare key anywhere in or on your vehicle, no matter where you park it.
* NEVER leave your car running while unattended or unlocked.
* If possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage.
* Park in well-lit areas.
* Keep the exterior of homes and driveways well illuminated.
* Close all your vehicle’s windows completely when parked.
* Consider installing a GPS system, a visible anti-theft device or an audible alarm.
* Never leave valuable personal property in your vehicle.
* Also, secure the transmitter for your garage door opener to prevent access to your home.

  1. All of these steps by vehicle owners are important, but how about the key that locks these perpetrators up for good?
