RIDGEWOOD — Residents are split over whether the Board of Education should eliminate the April budget vote by moving the district’s elections to November.
Ridgewood is one of only 39 districts in the state — and 15 in Bergen County — to hold a budget vote in April. A switch last year in state law permits districts to move their elections to November, thus eliminating a budget vote altogether.
The school board Monday night sought input from residents on the proposed change.
“I am very much in favor of voters having voices in April,” resident Sally Brandes told the board, adding that the district’s budget has increased “astronomically” just within the last 10 years.
“If I had my way, we’d be voting on municipal budgets as well,” Brandes said.
School officials said Monday that doing away with the April budget vote could save the district more than $40,000 annually. In addition, officials said recent voter turnout for budget ballots has been low.
