ENGLEWOOD, NJ — Officials are asking residents in Englewood and Tenafly to keep an eye out for a white-tailed deer caught in netting and plastic planter material, after multiple sightings in the area.
Englewood Councilwoman Lisa Wisotsky shared in a Facebook post on Aug. 20 that the Englewood Health Officer contacted Bergen County Animal Control and the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife, both of which are aware of the tangled deer.
“The deer is mobile, able to eat, and will run away when approached,” Wisotsky said.
How Wildlife Officials Can Help
According to Englewood Health Officer James Fedorko, the situation, while unusual, is not unheard of. Deer have previously been found tangled in clotheslines, lights, and other household materials.
Officials stressed that only the Division of Fish & Wildlife has the authority and ability to free the deer. Wildlife officers can tranquilize the animal, safely remove the netting, and then reverse the sedation.
However, they will only respond if the deer can be contained on private property.
What Residents Should Do
If you see the tangled deer on your property, you are urged to immediately call the New Jersey Fish & Wildlife hotline at 877-927-6337.
The toll-free number is staffed 24/7 and can be used to report:
-
Wildlife entanglements or injuries
-
Fish kills or disease
-
Bear-related property damage
-
Environmental complaints, spills, or emergencies
Community Concern Growing
Photos of deer in the area with lights and netting wrapped around their antlers have circulated on social media, raising concern among residents. While the deer is not currently in immediate distress, officials want the public to know that help is available—but only if the animal can be safely contained for wildlife officers to act.
