Fair Lawn NJ, A routine recycling run turned into a high-stakes emergency on Saturday morning, January 24, 2026, as a garbage truck loaded with cardboard caught fire while traveling through the heart of Fair Lawn.

While the incident caused significant property damage and a logistical nightmare for local responders, the quick thinking of the driver prevented a much larger disaster on one of the borough’s busiest thoroughfares.

The Incident: Smoke on Broadway

The fire broke out early Saturday as the truck was heading eastbound on Broadway near Midland Avenue. Upon noticing heavy smoke billowing from the hopper, the driver demonstrated remarkable composure, maneuvering the massive, smoking vehicle away from active traffic and into the parking lot of an unoccupied building.

Mechanical Failure Thwarts Firefighting Efforts

When the Fair Lawn Fire Department arrived on the scene, they faced an unexpected technical hurdle. Typically, in the event of a “load fire,” the truck’s hydraulic system is used to dump the burning material onto the pavement so firefighters can douse it effectively.

However, the intense heat caused a complete failure of the truck’s hydraulic system.

With the burning cardboard trapped inside the metal compactor, firefighters had to battle the smokey blaze through the truck’s openings, a process made significantly more difficult by the tightly packed, flammable material.

The Aftermath: A Total Loss

Despite the best efforts of Fair Lawn’s emergency services, the vehicle could not be saved.

  • Property Damage: The truck was declared a total loss and had to be towed from the scene.

  • No Injuries: Fortunately, the driver escaped unharmed, and no firefighters or bystanders were injured during the operation.

  • Cleanup Operations: The parking lot where the truck came to a stop required extensive cleanup. The truck’s owner has reportedly arranged for a specialized crew to remove the charred debris and remediate the area.

Agencies on the Scene

The response was a multi-agency effort, ensuring public safety and traffic control throughout the morning:

  • Fair Lawn Fire Department: Primary fire suppression.

  • Fair Lawn Police Department: Traffic diversion and scene security.

  • Fair Lawn Rescue Squad: Standby medical support.

Safety Reminder for Residents

While the cause of this specific fire is under investigation, local fire officials often remind residents that “wish-cycling”—placing batteries, chemicals, or flammable items in recycling bins—is a leading cause of truck fires.

Traffic Note: Motorists are advised to be cautious near the Broadway and Midland Avenue area as cleanup crews may still be active in the vicinity.
