Fair Lawn Police Department Welcomes New Chief: Congratulations to Chief Joseph J. Dawicki!

Fair Lawn NJ, the Fair Lawn Police Department has proudly announced the promotion of Joseph J. Dawicki as the ninth Police Chief in the department’s distinguished history dating back to 1930.

👮‍♂️ Meet Chief Joseph J. Dawicki

Chief Dawicki is not only a highly accomplished law enforcement officer, but also a lifelong resident of Fair Lawn. A 1996 graduate of Fair Lawn High School, he went on to earn his degree from Ramapo College of New Jersey in 2000. He began his law enforcement journey with the Fair Lawn Auxiliary Police in 1998 before joining the department full time in 2001.

Over his 20+ year career, Dawicki has served in every rank and major function within the department, including:

  • Patrol operations

  • The detective bureau

  • Community policing initiatives

  • Training and development

🎓 Elite Credentials & Career Highlights

In 2024, Chief Dawicki completed the 289th Session of the FBI National Academy, an elite program that admits only the top 1% of police executives worldwide. He followed that honor by earning a Master’s Degree in Public Safety from the University of Virginia in May 2025.

His advanced training positions him as a modern law enforcement leader, committed to ethical leadership, data-informed policing, and community collaboration.

💬 Chief Dawicki’s Vision for Fair Lawn

In his first official remarks, Chief Dawicki emphasized the importance of developing future leaders within the department and incorporating 21st-century police management practices. He stated:

“I’m focused on building the next generation of leaders in the Fair Lawn Police Department and am excited to apply modern policing principles that prioritize transparency, professionalism, and community trust.”

He also reaffirmed his dedication to community engagement, highlighting the value of co-producing public safety services with the residents of Fair Lawn:

“As both a resident and a public servant, I’m committed to deepening our partnership with the community to ensure Fair Lawn remains a safe, inclusive, and vibrant place to live and work.”
